One of the most interesting and fascinating instruments to play is the organ. There are many variations of this instrument: from the electronic standard, the more refined church organ, the orchestral organ or the theater pipe organ. They can have from one to seven keyboards. Learning may seem difficult, but it is also extremely rewarding.
Steps
Step 1. The organ is a stimulating instrument to play, and there are many ways to play it correctly, both in the classical and popular repertoire
The organ, or at least the pipe organ, is not really the first instrument to study in order to learn to read music: it would be better to start with a piano.
Step 2. Find an organ teacher
Ask around, local churches or boarding schools. Many schools have college organ programs. The best way, however, is to contact a local group of organists. If you choose to speak to a church organist, make sure they are well qualified to teach.
Step 3. There are some books that teach you to play the keyboard quickly
One of the best is "Playing the piano and the organ in 24 hours", by Enrico Riccardi.
Step 4. Purchase a pair of organ shoes
You can buy them online for around 50 euros. Pedals are a unique aspect of the organ, and having good shoes will help you develop better technique.
Step 5. Purchase an introductory level organ book
There are many on the market, try to get suggestions from your teacher or another organist.
Step 6. Practice
There is only one way to learn to play an instrument: practice.
Step 7. Pedal Techniques
The standard organ has 32 notes. Some are 30 or less. Keep your heels together often. The knees should be one octave high and pushed to the ends of the pedal board when needed. Also use the inside of the foot and ankles. The only way to learn these techniques is to practice with a teacher.
Advice
- Almost all organists have a previous piano training. If you are inexperienced, study the piano first for a few years.
- Listen to good music. There are many opportunities to hear excellent performances, especially in metropolitan areas. In addition, you can visit some sites, such as www.ohscatalog.org, and find a large selection of organ, classical, orchestral and theater CDs.
- Get to know other organists in your area. It is usually a relatively small group of people, but it tends to be well interconnected. The organists will provide you with advice and support.
Warnings
- Don't expect to quickly learn everything there is to know about this tool. Start with the piano. This is a music experience worth doing.
- Each organ is different, especially if you play the pipe organ. Before playing an organ, study its rests, tone, and sensitivity.
