Do you feel like a real geekette and are you proud of it? You can be comely (or sexy) by embracing your geeky side and, at the same time, dressing in a feminine way. The “geek chic” style is based on a mix of stereotypically unpopular geek features, such as glasses, comics, computers and video games, and chic details.
Steps
Step 1. Get some nice but stylish glasses, whether you need them or not (remember that there are non-prescription lenses)
This step is optional. Make sure they fit your face and flatter it. They are the foundation of the geek chic look. Choose a frame that you like, it will help you look more geeky.
Step 2. Borrow elements from the stereotypical geek image, to which you'll add chic details
The stereotype reflects a person who lacks a sense of style or has an overtly nerd and bookworm look, which is why the look has been dubbed "by Poindexter". Instead of going straight for this look, add something different. Make it look more fashionable, but still retain its geek roots. Example: if you like skinny jeans, wear them with a fitted shirt that depicts a joke about the world of computing or wear a shirt / polo with a tie.
Step 3. Geek chic can also be mixed with other styles, such as emo, the preppy, the goth, urban, hippie, indie, boho, etc.
Be creative and original. Nobody likes scripts. Make sure your outfit isn't too trendy either.
Step 4. Try to wear tight-fitting clothes that are somewhat reminiscent of classic and cult movies or books, video games, comics, anime characters; or try something like science fiction or related to computer science
Be original and wear clothes that no one else would wear. Just make sure they fit you.
Step 5. Mix classic and professional garments with casual ones
Bring original shirts, polo shirts and ties, jeans, diamond patterned blouses, pleated skirts, etc. Experiment. You can layer the polos on top of t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts or even shirts. Another option is to buy traditional office clothes, like shirts, and pair them with an article of clothing you wouldn't see in such a context, like jeans. Try to have a different style, but make sure you don't look too professional, you need to look informally professional or have a casual bookworm look. As for the t-shirts, take inspiration from those of stores like Hot Topic, while, for the shirts, opt for those of Abercrombie.
Step 6. You don't have to actually run out of money to get your wardrobe redone
You can mix and customize the clothes you already have. For example, a combination of a diamond patterned sweater and a shirt works. You can also opt for a more flamboyant look, combining many colors, prints and fabrics. Just make sure to introduce a geeky touch to it, for example by wearing a necklace with a Super Mario pendant and a vaguely nerdy t-shirt.
Step 7. If you wear a skirt, try to choose one that comes to the knee or shorter (not too much)
A-line, pleated or pencil skirts work great with the look. They can be of any fabric (denim, khaki, etc.).
Step 8. Knee-length socks add an extra touch of style to a skirt
Get them in different colors and make sure they combine well, without contrasts.
Step 9. Add accessories, which can be homemade or bought
They can fit the theme of the outfit. Maybe a small Star Wars sword hooked to jeans? A watch with Super Mario? Be creative! The leggings allow you to enrich the style. You can also wear suspenders (see below for more information). Any type of accessory (gold, silver, plastic, hoop earrings, bangles, necklaces) is fine, as long as it fits your face, body and outfit.
Step 10. Don't go for an elaborate or too trendy haircut if you want to look even more geeky
You can have a nice cut, but nothing super trendy. Curly or straight hair (or even braided hair) is fine, provided the effect is neat. You can wear matching clothes clips, hair bands and so on to enrich your outfit.
Step 11. Just because you're a geek, that doesn't mean you can't wear makeup
If you like, you can go for a simple look and don't apply any products, but doing otherwise is not a problem. Go for neutral shades, don't overdo it. The natural look is the one for you. A little creativity and style are welcome, you can have fun with make-up, as long as it's not a make-up you would do for carnival. Apply a veil of blush. If you go to work, try a neutral lipstick. If you wear glasses, eyeliner is ideal for flattering yourself.
Step 12. If you have an electronic device (iPod, laptop, mobile phone), add some accessories, personalize it or decorate it to make it stylish
Do what you want! You don't have to decorate it with stickers, you can also give it a little different touch by buying a cute case.
Step 13. As for the shoes, wear the ones you like best
Sneakers are perfect for a geek chic look, especially Converse. Boots and shoes with heels, with or without knee-high socks, are a must in your shoe cabinet. Any shoe is fine (assuming the heels aren't extremely high, otherwise you'll look less geeky).
Step 14. Adding a shoulder bag with a bold and original color scheme is optional
Put it on and you are ready to go out! If shoulder bags aren't your thing, backpacks with simple designs (plaid, plain, purple, for example) work just as well.
Step 15. Jeans
Make sure they are not tight and fit your shoes. Try a slightly high-waisted pant to further give yourself that vaguely geeky look.
Step 16. Braces:
double or thin, new or vintage, plain or colored… They can really add an extra touch to the look. Try some nerdy glasses, suspenders, knee-high socks and two pigtails. Perfect!
Advice
- Feel free to try making your own clothes and accessories!
- Search Google for “geek chic” for inspiration.
- If a piece doesn't seem appropriate for a true geek's wardrobe, then it's not geek chic.
- A good part of the image of the geek chic style borrows factors from several alternative subcultures widespread among young people, such as emo, preppy, goth, hippie and bohemian, among others. You can mix geek chic with many other styles. Don't limit yourself!
- The following is optional, but if you have the skills to make garments and accessories, take advantage of them by giving rise to geeky creations.
- Just try to make sense. If a look is a jumble of styles, don't wear it.
Warnings
- Stay away from suspenders if you don't know what to wear or how to match them. They can transform from a geek chic article to a geeky fashion victim article. On the other hand, if you're a geeky fashion expert now, go ahead and put them on.
- If you're not really a geeky, it's risky to try and convert to one. You could end up becoming a caricature. The realm of true geeks is only open to those who are deep inside.
- This style is only recommended if you are in college, or are younger, or if you work in a professional sector open to various eccentricities. Geek chic fashion has especially spread among pre-teen girls. Whereas more mature male geeks tend to dress and behave more conservatively, geek chic is closely associated with youth, so if you're older, you run the risk of attracting the wrong types of men or not getting caught. seriously from the right ones. Remember, the most authentic way to be geeky isn't a fad, it's a state of mind.
