Are your sleeves too long? Is it too hot in the room you are in? Do you simply want a more casual and relaxed look? Roll up your sleeves! There are three styles you can learn quickly: the simple fallback, the forearm cuff, and the trendy elbow cuff.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Classic fallback

Step 1. Loosen the cuff

Take off the cufflinks, if you are wearing any, and unbutton the sleeve.

Step 2. Begin folding

Fold the cuff up so that the crease is where the wrist seam meets the sleeve. If the shirt does not have a highlighted cuff, fold the end of the sleeve approximately five to seven cm, evenly around the wrist.

Step 3. Continue rolling

Fold the sleeve again, using the thickness of the first fold as a guide. Repeat as many times as needed or desired. Rolling up a sleeve with several folds or past the elbow can help prevent it from slipping down quickly.

Step 4. Secure the sleeve if necessary

Many shirts are made from fabric that will stay in place on its own, but if you're wearing a silk shirt or other slippery fabric, hold the sleeves in place with a safety pin. Be sure to pin them from the inside to hide them.

Method 2 of 3: Cuff on the forearm

Step 1. Unbutton the cuff

Also unbutton any buttons on the forearm. If you are wearing cufflinks, take them off.

Step 2. Fold the cuff back

Fold it so that the inside is in view. The crease should be exactly where the cuff seam meets the sleeve.

Step 3. Fold it up again

Fold the sleeve a second time to a height equal to the first fold. Making sure both folds are the same gives this look a neater look.

Step 4. Hide the corners

Examine the sleeve to make sure the corners are hidden so the fold stays in place. If you're wearing a slippery cloth shirt, secure the sleeve in place with a safety pin. Repeat on the other side.

  • This type of fold works well if you are wearing a sweater over your shirt. Tuck up the sleeves of the sweater a bit before starting and then reposition them so that they fall just above the cuff.
  • This type of fold is also good for an elegant shirt that you don't want to crease by rolling it up to the elbows.

Method 3 of 3: Elbow Cuff Fashion

Step 1. Unbutton the cuff

Also unbutton any buttons on the forearm along the entire length of the sleeve and remove the cufflinks. If you are wearing a sweater over your shirt, this fold will not fit, so you will need to take it off.

Step 2. Fold the cuff from the inside out

Instead of folding it where the seam meets the sleeve, pull the end of the cuff over the elbow. Your sleeve will be turned upside down.

Step 3. Fold the bottom of the folded sleeve back

Use your fingers to pull the bottom edge of the sleeve back and pull it towards the end of the cuff.

Step 4. Leave part of the cuff uncovered, or cover it completely

It is fashionable to leave the tip of the cuff visible outside the crease, especially if you are wearing a shirt with cuffs of a different color from the rest. You can also choose to completely cover the cuff; simply pull the folded sleeve all the way over the cuff.

Advice

  • With a knitted stretch shirt, you may be able to roll the sleeve over the arm, past the elbow.
  • You can roll up the sleeves with one hand while wearing the shirt, but it is easier to do it with two hands before putting it on.
  • Some catalogs sell some kind of bracelet designed to keep the sleeves rolled up and keep them from getting annoyed.
  • If a shirt's sleeves are too long for you, consider shortening them and hemming them, or have a laundry or tailor's shop do it for you.
