Weeding is a task no one wants to do, but it must be done. By following this simple technique you can accomplish this chore much easier.
Steps
Step 1. Identify the weeds you want to remove, so you don't accidentally pull out beneficial plants or plants you want to keep while you work
Step 2. Consider the risks you may encounter when you tear them
Listed here are some of the dangers inherent in this seemingly safe activity.
- Beware of toxic plants, including nettle, poison ivy, oak, sumac and plants you may be allergic to.
- Check for insects that can live in your garden or lawn. You can come across spiders, bees, wasps, ants and other potentially dangerous insects while doing this activity.
- Watch the ground carefully for snakes if you live in an area populated by them.
- Know your limits. Weeding can be a really tiring job on the back, so be careful not to overdo it.
- Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated while working if the weather is hot and / or sunny.
Step 3. Choose the right time
Weed removal is much easier when the soil is wet, so working right after a rain will make the task easier.
Step 4. Get a pair of gardening gloves if you want
You should also get yourself a sturdy pointed spade and pillow to protect your knees.
Step 5. Grab the grass at the base of the main stem, as low as possible
Step 6. Take the underside of the weed firmly and abruptly tear it off the ground
Continue until you have removed all of them, leaving the garden free of weeds.
Step 7. Use a pointed tool to loosen the soil around the weed roots, if necessary, to make removal easier
Step 8. Collect all the weeds and dispose of them properly so that the seeds are not reintroduced into the lawn or garden
Advice
- For areas affected by a lot of weeds, you may find it easier to use a shovel and remove all the vegetation and then simply replant the plants you want.
- Try weeding when they are young, to prevent re-planting and to make the job easier.
- Do not tear off the top of the stem, as the roots that remain in the soil produce even more.
Warnings
- Be careful not to damage the plants you want to keep.
- Be aware of the risks listed in the previous steps, including poisonous plants, insects, etc.
