You will become your child's hero if you surprise him for his birthday with a splendid 3D dinosaur-shaped cake. If your kids love dinosaurs, you can surprise them with a three-dimensional dinosaur-shaped birthday cake. This way you will save some money and you can make the cake with your own hands.
Ingrediants
- 2 round sponge cakes with a diameter of about 23 cm
-
2 types of cake icing
- First frosting: Add some green food coloring
- Second glaze: half glaze without dye, the other half must be added with blue dye
- Sugar paste, colored if possible (look for it at the supermarket or make it at home)
- Eye candy
- More candy for the tail spikes
- Chocolate chips for toenails
- Toasted coconut flour for prehistoric grass
Steps
Step 1. Create two paper shapes based on the image above (click to enlarge)
You can print them or simply look at them from your computer and replicate them by hand on a piece of paper. Make sure they stand on a 23cm diameter cake.
Step 2. Bake two 23 cm diameter sponge cakes and let them cool
Remove them from the cake pans.
- Homemade sponge cakes are denser and more resistant than those made with powdered preparations. It will take you longer, but the end result will be better and the cake will be easier to decorate.
- If you have time, place the sponge cakes in the freezer before making the dinosaur. This way the cake won't crumble.
Step 3. Cut out the dinosaur's body
Find the center and cut the first sponge cake in half with a bread knife. Put the two halves together with the cut edges aligned and place them on a work surface, as in the photo. This will be the dinosaur's body. Leave it aside for now.
Step 4. Cut out the other parts of the body
Cut the paper shapes and place them on top of the second sponge cake (the same way they were arranged before they were cut, so they all fit). Cut the pieces of the cake.
Before cutting the sponge cake, try placing the paper cutouts on the dinosaur's body to see if the size fits. If there are any adjustments to be made, proceed to the paper before cutting the various pieces of sponge cake
Step 5. Assemble the dinosaur
See the photo to help you. Use the white icing to join the two halves of the body. Then attack the other parts. Secure the head with toothpicks (remember where you put them, so they can be removed when the cake is served). Smooth the corners, the edges of the feet and shoulders.
Step 6. Spread a thin layer of green icing all over the cake with a spatula
This way many surface crumbs will mix with the glaze. Make sure the layer is light. A homemade sponge cake will help as it is more resistant, while those made with powdered preparations tend to crumble and are more difficult to work with.
Step 7. Add the scales
Apply the green icing with a pastry bag and blend it with the blue icing to give the dinosaur a realistic touch.
Step 8. Add the sugar paste
Apply diamond-shaped sugar paste to the dinosaur's body. If the frosting doesn't hold the diamonds together, secure them with toothpicks.
-
To create the diamonds, roll out a 3mm thick layer of sugar paste. Cut the dough into a diamond shape with a small knife. Create the details with a toothpick. Do as many as you like.
Step 9. Decorate the serving dish
Spread a layer of white icing on the plate, all around the dinosaur, and add toasted coconut flour to recreate the herb. Add as many other final details as you want - candy for the spikes and eyes, chocolate drops for the nails.
Step 10. Done
Advice
- Make sure the sponge cake is completely cold before assembling the cake, otherwise it will crumble and be difficult to cut.
- You can add palm trees as decorations by using parsley and stick-shaped cookies. Make a real forest as all the children will probably want a palm each.
- Adjust the ingredients according to the size of the cake.
Warnings
- Don't use too many toothpicks as they will pierce the cake. Use as little as necessary to secure the various parts. Remember where you put them to avoid serving them with the slice of cake.
- Use a different pastry bag for each icing so you don't mix colors.
- The head may come off if it is too large or does not have good support. If so, use more sponge cake to make something that holds it up, like a tree, house, or other dinosaur.
