Quinoa is a nutrient-rich plant-based food that can be incorporated into a variety of dishes. However, quinoa seeds have a coating that can give them a tart flavor and notes similar to dried fruit. Using a fine mesh strainer or bowl, you can wash the quinoa before cooking to prevent this problem.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use a fine mesh strainer
Step 1. Place a fine mesh colander under the sink faucet
If you use a coarse one, the quinoa will leak out of the holes and end up in the sink. Don't have a colander? You can also use a coffee filter.
Step 2. Put the quinoa in the colander
Measure the amount of quinoa you want to use and pour it into the colander or coffee filter. Proceed carefully to make sure the seeds don't overflow and end up in the sink.
Step 3. Run cold water over the quinoa until it is clean
Turn on the cold water tap and let it run over the quinoa for about five minutes. You can shake the seeds with one hand to speed up the process. The quinoa will be ready when the water that comes out of the bottom of the colander is no longer cloudy.
Method 2 of 2: Wash the Quinoa in a Bowl
Step 1. Pour the quinoa into a bowl
Measure the amount of seeds you want to use, then move them to a container large enough to hold both the quinoa and water.
Step 2. Let it soak in cold water for five minutes
Fill the bowl with enough water to cover the seeds. As you let them sit, the water should turn cloudy.
Step 3. Stir in the quinoa
Swirl the seeds in the bowl using a whisk or wooden spoon. This movement should remove the harsh coating from the seeds. Move the whisk in a circular motion to stir both the water and the quinoa.
Step 4. Drain the water
Slowly turn the bowl upside down while holding the seeds with one hand to drain the water. If you have a fine mesh strainer, use it to make the procedure easier.
Step 5. Repeat these steps until the quinoa has become completely clean
It may be necessary to repeat the process several times to wash it well. Once the water in the bowl has become clear, the quinoa will be ready to be cooked.
