The turnip, despite being one of those vegetables unjustly neglected and not very present on our tables, is a very easy vegetable to find, both at the supermarket and at the greengrocer. It is nutritious, as well as very flavorful, and can make your dishes really tasty. It looks like radish, yet it is more like potato after cooking. Turnip can be cooked in many different ways: sautéed, grilled, seared, roasted and it can even be enjoyed raw. If you want to learn how to cook it, follow the simple steps in this guide.

Steps
Method 1 of 5: Preparation
Step 1. Choose fresh turnips from your local dealer
You can tell that they are fresh with hard skin, firm texture and lush green buds. Don't buy turnips that appear spotted or have wilted tops - it means they're already old and will taste bitter.
Step 2. Remove the green buds using a kitchen knife
Step 3. Rinse the turnips with cold water to remove all dirt and debris
Step 4. Peel the turnips with a sharp knife
If the turnip has already been peeled or the outside appears cracked, another layer must be removed to expose the cooler surface. This process is similar to the one used for onion.
Method 2 of 5: Sauteed Turnips
Step 1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat
It will take at least 30 seconds before it starts to heat up.
Step 2. Sauté the chopped onion
Step 3. Slice 3 or 4 turnips into thin strips
They should look like chips.
Step 4. Add the turnips to the pan when the onion has softened
Then pour in another tablespoon of olive oil.
Step 5. Let the turnips cook for 5 minutes, then lower the heat
They must continue to cook until they become tender. Then remove them from the heat and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 6. It is time to serve them
Add a tablespoon of lemon juice, mix well and serve them while they are still hot.
Method 3 of 5: Grilled Turnips
Step 1. Prepare the grill
Turn on the barbecue or electric grill.
Step 2. Take 450 grams of turnips and cut them into four parts
Place the pieces on the skewers for easier grilling.
Step 3. Use a pastry brush to coat the turnips with olive oil on both sides
Step 4. Season them with salt and pepper to taste
Step 5. Grill the turnips over medium heat until tender
You should let them cook for about two minutes on each side. Finally, arrange them on a serving plate.
Step 6. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 1 tablespoon of minced garlic in a pan over high heat
Wait a couple of minutes for the garlic to start frying.
Step 7. Lower the heat and let the garlic cook for another 2 minutes until golden
Step 8. Turn off the heat, add 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon of pepper
Mix all the ingredients well.
Step 9. Pour a few tablespoons of the flavored oil over the turnips
Step 10. Serve the turnips by adding a lemon zest while still hot
Method 4 of 5: Roasted Turnips
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 260 ° C
Place the rack in the center of the oven.
Step 2. Peel 680 grams of turnips and divide them into four parts
The pieces should resemble lemon slices.
Step 3. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a small pan
Step 4. Drizzle the turnips with butter in a small bowl
Also add salt and pepper to taste.
Step 5. Arrange them on a baking sheet
Make sure the pieces are well spaced.
Step 6. Roast the turnips for 25-30 minutes, until soft and golden
While cooking, you should stir them a couple of times to make sure they are roasted on all sides.
Step 7. Serve them still hot
Enjoy your meal!
Method 5 of 5: Cooking Turnips in Other Ways
Step 1. Choose your favorite recipe for cooking potatoes, and replace one half with turnips
Prepare turnips the same way you cook potatoes, the end result will surprise you.
Step 2. Cut the turnip into thin slices and serve it raw on the table
You can enjoy turnip slices with a pinch of salt, or use them to complement your burger or other dish instead of raw onion.
Step 3. Grate it
Using a cheese grater you can grate it and combine it with your salads. It will add crunchiness to the dish and enhance its final flavor.
Step 4. Finely chop the turnip and add it to the stir-fry soup, just like you would celery and onion
Simmering together with the other ingredients will make your dish richer.
Step 5. Make the turnips crisp
Cut them into thick slices and cook them in a steamer for 3 to 5 minutes. Then place them on a baking sheet and bake them in the oven at about 54 ° C for 8-10 hours. When they become dry and crumbly, take them out of the oven to cool. Serve them as a snack, or add them to soup instead of croutons.
