So, you have finally read all the articles on wikiHow on how to create the characters, structure the plot and finally write your first novel. Congratulations, this is definitely a great achievement! Now, however, you would like to publish your book online, and you are asked to provide an ISBN number. "No problem!" you will have said to yourself “just know what it is and how much it costs!”.
ISBN (from English: International Standard Book Number), is an international reference number of the book, and is in fact a specific and unique number assigned to each published volume, so that it can be easily identified internationally. This allows bookstores and readers to know which book they are buying, what it is about, and the author's name. It's a bit tedious process, but we've already done the "hard work" for you, and we're going to show you how to get one. Below you will find the simplified procedure to follow through the US site, but for those wishing to learn more about the expenses to be incurred and the procedure to be followed in Italy, they must refer to the website
Steps
Step 1. Find the ISBN agency closest to you
Open your browser and type
-
Click on the menu “- select group agency -” to select the agency closest to you. Virtually all countries in the world are on the list. Select your country of origin. We will use the United States for our example.
-
We discover that our reference agency is the “R. R. Bowker company”, in New Jersey. The address, telephone and fax number, contact name, as well as e-mail and website are also listed.
Step 2. Click on the URL address
In the blink of an eye you will be "transported" to a really flashy website, where you will learn all about the "what", "why" and "how" ISBN numbers work, but be careful not to be dazzled by the site itself.
For our purpose, we will go directly to the procedures on how to obtain our ISBN number
Step 3. Click on the huge orange button that says "Get your ISBN TODAY"
You will be directed to another page, where you will be exposed to more information on ISBN numbers. You can decide to read everything calmly, or to go directly to the specific page for purchases.
- Here, you can purchase as many ISBN numbers as you need.
- Important: You will need an ISBN number for each of the versions of the book you wish to publish, including hardbacks, paperbacks, ePubs, PDFs, applications, and second editions.
Step 4. Fill out the form
You can buy your ISBN even before you actually need it, and when it's time to publish, log into the agency's website and fill in the form and the required information.
