Is there something you can't stop thinking about? Is this an idea starting to bother you? Regardless of what that thought is, following these steps will help you deal with the problem of obsessively thinking about something.
Steps
Step 1. Seek professional help
The easiest and safest way to get rid of an obsession is to talk to a psychologist or therapist about it. Don't be ashamed to go to one of these professionals; it does not mean that you are crazy, it just means that you have a problem you need help with; it's perfectly normal. The psychologist will understand what's going on inside of you, dig deep and give you some good advice on how to deal with and overcome it. It is a process of personal discovery and self-understanding.
Step 2. Do something that doesn't force you to think
Scribble, play solitaire, listen to music, dance - your mind will focus on these little things and you will stop thinking about your obsession.
Step 3. Try to understand why this idea is so important to you that you can't stop thinking about it
If it's really something important, give it all the necessary attention. For example, if you are worried about an exam and do nothing but study and stress yourself, do not stop working hard, but avoid paying more attention to the study than necessary; especially when it comes to an exam, relaxing is just as important as studying. If it is a harmful irrational obsession, such as hatred of someone / something, it is vital that you solve the problem before it takes over your life. You need to understand that you are the first to be harmed by the obsession, not other people.
If your obsessive thoughts are guilt, do something to lighten your burden. Apologize to the person you have wronged, confess to a priest if you are Catholic or Orthodox, go to the grave of the person you have harmed if they are no longer alive or do something good to compensate for the harm they have done (for example, volunteer or make a donation to a charity)
Step 4. Be more relaxed and optimistic
Nothing in this world deserves your full attention, no matter how important it is. Things often resolve themselves; you don't need to stress yourself out by thinking about it. In particular, if your obsession is about something that doesn't depend on you, such as a family member's illness or world peace, there's no need to worry so much.
Step 5. Talk to someone who knows you well and who you are close to
Sometimes a friend or family member understands you better than a psychologist, simply because they know you very well.
Step 6. Get better at something
Find a reason to trust yourself. People who accept themselves for who they are don't have these kinds of problems. Try to learn something you always wanted to be able to do; for example, study a foreign language or take drawing lessons.
Step 7. Express the way you feel through the drawing
Now that we're talking about drawing, this is a great way to express your feelings without saying a word; just draw whatever comes into your head. It doesn't matter if you are good, it is an activity that will help you in any case.
Step 8. Keep a journal
Writing about your feelings is also a healthy way to express your emotions. It is also a way to keep track of your progress. Whenever you haven't thought about something so insistently in a day, write it down in your journal. This will remind you that you can defeat your obsession.
