When a woman is in front of an incredibly dirty toilet, a Turkish woman, or is unable to use a toilet, she may feel that she is physically at a disadvantage compared to men. However, it is possible to urinate standing up, as long as you are willing to do some practice. To urinate standing up, try one of the following methods.

Step 1. Familiarize yourself with your anatomy

You may not have thought much about how things work in your lower parts, so it's a good idea to review the basics of female anatomy by looking at a diagram or using a mirror to observe yourself.

  • Find the urethra. The urethra is a tube that connects the bladder with the outside. Urine passes through this 4 cm tube and is expelled from a small hole located behind the clitoris, immediately in front of the vagina.
  • Find the lips. The labia majora are the two rounded folds of tissue found on the outside on either side of the urethral and vaginal openings. The labia minora are the two folds of tissue contained within the labia majora.

    • The opening of the urethra is very small, so don't worry if you need a minute to find it in a mirror.
    • It is a good idea to touch these parts of your anatomy to recognize them by touch. As you learn to urinate standing up, you will need to use your fingers to open the labia minora to achieve a more controlled urine flow due to the increased exposure of the urethra.

    Step 2. Maintain hygiene

If you know that you will find yourself in a place where the toilets are disgusting or are not there, keep a few items on hand to help you stay clean.

    • Hand sanitizer. Before urinating standing up, it is essential to wash your hands. You will have to touch your genitals and you will not want the germs on your hands to cause you a urinary tract infection. Women have a short urethra, so it's easy for germs to reach the bladder. If soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer to protect yourself.
    • Wet wipes. Bring a travel pack of wipes with you to clean your hands when you're done. In some standing urination styles, your fingers will get wet.

Step 3. Make sure nobody sees you

You may need to urinate standing up because you are camping or because the women's bathroom is crowded and the men's room is free. Before starting, make sure you have the necessary privacy. If you are interrupted after starting to urinate, the situation could quickly precipitate and cause embarrassment for everyone involved.

Step 1. Two finger method for beginners

When you learn to urinate standing up, you will want the process to be as easy as possible. You will improve with practice, but for now, follow this introductory method to train at home.

    • Wash your hands. Wash them well with warm soapy water, then pat them dry.
    • Remove any clothing you wear below your waist. As a beginner, you are likely to make some mistakes. To prevent urine from staining your pants, skirts, underwear, or shoes, remove everything. If you have a dress that comes below the waist, you may want to take that off as well.
    • Stand in front of the toilet or in the shower. Stand straight with your feet about 2 feet apart. Use the fingers of both hands to separate the lips as best you can. Place your fingers slightly in front of the urethra. Pull your fingers up and slightly forward with equal pressure for both.
    • Start the jet. Rotate your hips to slightly control the direction of the jet. Push hard at the beginning and again when the jet is about to finish. This way you will avoid dripping.
    • Clean and dry any splashes around the toilet or rinse the shower. Make sure you wash your hands again.

      • Don't be discouraged if you've urinated down one leg or squirted everywhere - it's a real possibility for beginners. The secret is to practice a lot; if you do, you will undoubtedly see improvements.
      • Experiment a little with posture. You may find that you benefit from bending your knees or arching your back. All women are different, so try a couple of different positions.

Step 2. One-handed method for more experienced women

      • Wash your hands.
      • Remove clothes that are out of the way. Pull down your skirt or pants and panties.
      • Prepare by holding some toilet paper or a washcloth with one hand, so that you can clean yourself if the urine goes where it shouldn't.
      • With the other hand, form a "V" with the first and second fingers and spread the inside of the labia minora apart, pulling upwards. You will need to widen the labia minora so that the urine flows forward with a stream and does not run down the leg. By adjusting the upward thrust, in addition to the position of the hips, you can control the direction of the jet (but some practice is required).
      • Clean up and wipe any spills around the toilet if you are at home. Make sure you wash your hands again.

When you have practiced a lot and are confident in your ability to control the flow of urine, you can use the one-handed method without taking off all your clothes. You can just drop the pants down a bit, but if they have a long zip, you may be able to fully open the zip and leave the pants in place. Lift the skirt with your free hand. Use the hand that forms the "V" to move the panties to the side of the crotch

      Step 3. Funnel method

Use a tool that allows women to urinate standing up. Instruments for female urination have been around for nearly a century, and their design has evolved considerably over this time. They are available in disposable versions; you can find them in online pharmacies and on specialized websites.

      • Wash your hands.
      • Remove any clothes you risk getting dirty. It should be enough to unbutton the pants and pull the front of the panties down or move them to one side.
      • Place the tool. If it's plastic or some other hard material, you can put your hand on either side of the device. If it's silicone or some other flexible material, stretch your thumb and middle finger to hold the tool from front to back. Place it firmly against your body, paying attention to its snug fit in the back. Route the outlet tube away from your body and out of your pants.
      • Direct the jet. Move your hips, bend your legs and arch your back to find a comfortable position that allows you to control your flow. Direct the urine to a suitable point; in a toilet or out of sight.
      • When you're done, remove the device. If you don't have toilet paper, use it to remove drips. Shake it up and rinse it with water if possible.

        • While this is generally easier than using your fingers, it still takes practice to avoid splashing and dripping. Try using one of these tools at home several times before using it outside.
        • Some reusable devices are packaged with plastic bags or bags that can be used multiple times; others don't. Keep a plastic bag handy to store the device before and after use.
        • In an emergency situation, you can make such a device yourself from a plastic bottle. Cut the bottom of the bottle with scissors or a knife. Remove the cap and wash the top of the bottle well. Place the opening of the bottle over the urethra. Make sure it is directly over the opening or you will split the jet and get dirty all over. Direct the open side of the bottle away from you and use a firm but not forced stream.

        Step 4. Suspended method

If you have strong legs and are able to squat for several seconds, you can use the suspension method to urinate.

        • Raise the toilet seat. This will give you a slightly wider target and will avoid getting the tablet dirty. Of course, if you are using this method because the toilet is dirty, you don't need to worry. However, if you are not sure you can do it and are afraid of slipping, leave the tablet down so that it falls back on it.
        • Bend your knees and lower back so that you squat at an angle of about 90 degrees. If you are unable to position yourself at 90 degrees and just lean back, you will likely urinate on the tablet, pants and shoes. Find your balance by placing your forearms on your knees or placing a hand on the wall. Get as close to the toilet as possible without touching the surface.
        • Stand as far back as possible from the opening. The jet will flow forward, so starting further back you will avoid missing the opening and getting dirty with splashes.
        • Keep your head up. Focus on a point directly in front of you. Looking between your legs could make you lose your balance.
        • When you're done, clean and wash your hands if possible. If you left the toilet seat down, wipe it with toilet paper for the next person to use the toilet.

        Warnings

        • Urinating on your feet can be very dirty. Don't try a friend's house for the first time if you want to keep your friendship.
        • Remember that it takes time to learn. Don't be discouraged if you can't do it right away.
        • Remember that even if you only need to use a public toilet for urinating, other women may need to use it for defecating or for other reasons. Be a civilized person and raise the tablet - and if you miss your aim, clean up what you have dirtied; after all, it is the behavior women expect from polite men.
