At this time and time in history, many people don't read for pleasure. Internet and television are now the main form of entertainment and reading is now an activity linked to the past. However, reading can greatly improve your life experience, and there are ways to make it even more enjoyable, whether you read frequently or just for study.
Steps
Step 1. Find a type of reading that you like
Believe it or not, people prefer different types of reading. Some people do research, others read to learn how to do something, and some read to be able to savor stories or poems. First of all, try to understand why you want to read.
Step 2. Realize that there are countless types of reading materials
For example, if you want to read stories, keep in mind that there are many genres, such as science fiction novels, romance, fantasy, creative nonfiction, etc. Don't decide you don't like reading just because you don't like a particular type of book!
Step 3. Once you understand what kind of reading appeals to you, you should try various books and series in that area
Even within the same genre, there is a wide range of choices. For example, no one would say that Edgar Allan Poe's verses and Old Possum's "The Book of Cats at Work" are similar, even though both are of poetry.
Step 4. Remember:
you will proceed by trial and error. But, eventually, you will slowly develop an interest in reading!
Step 5. Go to your local library
This is a service that you pay with taxes and you can try all the books you want for free (as long as you remember to return them or renew the loan in time).
Step 6. Create a good reading environment
Find a place that is quiet, well-lit, and comfortable. You can also have a reading corner in your room.
Step 7. Try listening to some music
For some people, this makes reading more enjoyable. Soft music (in volume and type) is generally perceived better, but any type will do. It depends on what you like.
Advice
- Many people decide they don't like to read because they found the books they had to read in school boring. Keep in mind that schools often want to impose certain books on students and do not represent every type of reading material available at all.
- Once you find out what you like to read, be sure to vary from time to time. You never know when you might find a new favorite book.
- Read with a friend to discuss the book.
- Choose a book that suggests someone with the same reading tastes as you.
- Try reading plays. Thus Shakespeare enters the minds of many people, but you can actually read any play or tragedy. It is a rather different reading experience and is enjoyable for many people.
- For some it is helpful to read something about the author's training. If you like a particular writer's books, try to get some background information about him. It will help you make reading more enjoyable and fun. It will also help you learn more about the author, how his books were born and many other things.
- Remember not to limit yourself to a few books. Keep in mind that there are countless magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. that you can love to read.
