Baby bottle sterilizers are appliances created specifically to sterilize baby bottles to the maximum. Some models are available as units to be plugged in or put in the microwave; many microwave models also function as cold water sterilizers. The amount of liquid to be used and the duration of the sterilization process varies from model to model, so you will need to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Electric Steam Sterilizer
Step 1. Add the amount of water indicated in the sterilizer instructions
Usually, the amount equals about 200ml of water, however, it can vary depending on the brand of the product. An insufficient amount of water may not disinfect the bottles properly, while an excessive amount may overflow from the tray.
Step 2. Fill the sterilizer
Place a bottle upside down on each holder. Do not put more bottles than the present hooks. Usually, appliances can hold up to six bottles, so if you have more you will need to sterilize them later.
Step 3. Put teats, teats rings and lids inside
Arrange these components away from each other so that they do not touch each other. If your sterilizer has supports at the bottom, place them between them to keep them in place.
Step 4. Put the lid on
To clean the bottles, the sterilizer must generate steam. The steam must be contained to obtain the desired effect.
Step 5. Turn on the device
The sterilizer will automatically start heating the bottles to a temperature of 100 ° C creating a sufficient amount of steam to kill the bacteria. Typically, the process takes about 10 minutes.
Step 6. Remove the bottles at the end of the cycle
Do not try to remove them before the end of the cooling cycle of the device. Dry the bottles with a clean cloth or let them dry naturally.
Method 2 of 3: Microwave Steam Sterilizer
Step 1. Remove the grill from the pan
Most of these devices have a removable grille. The grill allows the steam to go upwards from the base, however, before filling the device it should be removed.
Step 2. Pour the water into the base
The device may have a line indicating where to fill it, if not, read the manufacturer's instructions. Usually, the amount of water to use is 200ml.
Step 3. Put the grill back
Some grids snap back into place with a snap closure, while others hold their position only with pressure.
Step 4. Put on the bottles and accessories
Each model has slightly different spaces in which to place each piece, however, all models have designated spaces for each component.
-
Place the teats in the space provided and screw the rings onto the teats.
-
Put the lids in the space provided. Many models have special supports for the lids.
-
Place the bottles upside down. In some devices, bottles need to be placed over the teats and rings; in others, however, there are separate supports only for baby bottles.
Step 5. Close the lid
Make sure it is tightly closed before starting the sterilization cycle.
Step 6. Microwave according to the manufacturer's instructions
Each model changes, however, generally it is necessary to leave it in the microwave for 8 minutes in 800 watt ovens; 6 minutes for 1000 watt ovens and 4 minutes for 1100 watt ovens.
Step 7. Allow to cool before removing bottles and accessories
The sterilizer will need to cool down for at least three minutes before it can be handled safely.
Method 3 of 3: Cold Water Sterilizer
Step 1. Remove the sterilizer cup
Many cold water sterilizers also work in the microwave. For cold water sterilization, the bottles are not placed in the tray used for the microwave process.
Step 2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to fill the tray
You will need to fill the base with very cold water. Each model must be filled above the microwave line since the water will disinfect the bottles and not the steam.
Step 3. Add the sterilizing solution or capsule
Use a specific product for your sterilizer or a product that can be used to disinfect baby bottles. Non-specific solutions may not be safe to use for your baby's bottles.
Step 4. Immerse bottles and accessories in the water
Make the bottles completely fill with water.
Step 5. Use the tray to hold everything underwater
The weight of the tray helps keep bottles and accessories underwater, ensuring complete sterilization.
Step 6. Read the manufacturer's instructions to check times
Usually, the bottles must remain immersed until the water is cold. You will likely need to remove them after about 10-15 minutes, although exact times may vary.
