Do you need to buy a new laptop bag? Nothing is worse than purchasing and then realizing that the computer does not fit in the case. Taking your measurements carefully in advance saves you a lot of hassle and the trip back to the store.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Measure the Screen
Step 1. Get a regular tape measure
Screen sizes are typically reported in inches, although metric is preferred in some places; in any case, you must proceed with the appropriate conversions.
Step 2. Find your starting point
Monitors are measured diagonally, so the starting point can be the bottom right or left corner. This value takes into account only the actual screen and not the surrounding structure, so take the measurement starting from the point where the visible part of the screen begins.
Step 3. Stretch the tape measure to the opposite corner
Remember that you only have to consider the visible part of the monitor and not the frame.
Initially, screens were measured diagonally just to make their size look more impressive
Step 4. Convert the value to tenths of an inch
Most of the tape measures available in Italy and Europe respect the metric system, but if you have found one that also shows inches, it is likely to be divided into sixteenths. However, in stores, monitors are classified according to dimensions in tenths of an inch (15.3 "; 17.1" and so on). If you want to know which category your computer screen belongs to, use the table you can see in the image.
Step 5. Convert centimeters to inches
To proceed, you must divide the value expressed in centimeters by 2, 54 and thus obtain the diagonal of the screen in inches.
For example, a 33.8cm screen corresponds to 13.3 inches (33.8: 2, 54 = 13.3)
Part 2 of 4: Measure Height
Step 1. Shut down your computer
The height of a laptop is measured with the screen closed.
Step 2. Lay the tape measure along the edge of one side
If the computer is not uniformly thick when closed, measure the thickest point.
Step 3. Extend the tape measure to the top edge of the lid
Most laptops are no taller than 5cm.
Step 4. Make the necessary conversions
If you measured the thickness in inches and want to know the equivalent in centimeters, multiply the value by 2.54.
For example, a 1.5 inch tall computer equals 3.8 cm (1.5 x 2.54 = 3.81)
Part 3 of 4: Measure the Width
Step 1. Place the tape measure in the front right or left corner
It is easier to measure at the front, as there are no protruding doors.
Step 2. Check the width of the computer by stretching the tape measure to the opposite front corner
Remember to take rounded edges into consideration.
Step 3. If you found the figure in inches, change it to centimeters
The dimensions of laptop cases and bags are usually expressed in centimeters, so you must make the appropriate conversion, in case the measurement tool is divided into inches. As always, just multiply the number in inches by 2.54.
For example, the width of 14 inches corresponds to 35.6 cm (14 x 2.54 = 35.56)
Part 4 of 4: Measure the Depth
Step 1. Place the tape measure on the back right or left corner
Step 2. Measure the left side of the computer to the front corner
Be careful to consider rounded edges as well.
Step 3. Convert inches to centimeters (if needed)
If the measuring instrument appreciates inches, but you need to know the data in centimeters, proceed to calculate the equivalence by multiplying the value by 2, 54 and then find the depth of the computer in centimeters.
