Making a braid on your hair requires a little practice to achieve a refined and uniform look. Take some time to learn how to braid your hair using these 3 most common braid styles.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Traditional Braid
Step 1. Brush your hair until there are no more knots
It is recommended to do the braid in front of a mirror to see its progress.
Step 2. Wash your hands to remove any sticky hair products
Dry them well.
Step 3. Decide which side you want to make the braid on
You can do it on both sides or in the center.
You can use this method for a very small section of hair, instead of braiding your hair all at once
Step 4. Gather the hair at the base of the skull
If you're doing a side braid, be sure to pull your hair up and bring it to that side of your head.
Step 5. Divide the hair into 3 sections
Hold a section of hair with your right hand, a section with your left hand and leave the middle section free.
Step 6. Slide the right section over the middle section, catching the right section with the index finger of your left hand
Move the middle section to the right with your right hand.
Step 7. Grab the leftmost section with the index finger of your right hand
Weave the left section over the middle section.
Step 8. Repeat the weave of the right section on the central one, then the left one on the central one until the braid runs the length of your hair
Step 9. Tie the ends with a hair elastic
Method 2 of 3: French Braid
Step 1. Brush your hair well
The French braid is more complicated than the traditional one as the braid will start from the top of the head by gathering the hair starting at the temples.
Step 2. Use a comb to take the section of hair from the top of the head
This extends from the temples to the top of the head.
Step 3. Divide this section into 3 parts, keeping the hair upwards
Step 4. Bring the right section to the middle section
Then, weave the left section over the one that is now in the center, as if you were making a traditional braid.
This is the start of your braid. It should start from the top of the head
Step 5. Grab a small section of hair from the right side of the head
Add it to the hair you are holding in your right hand.
Step 6. Weave this section right over the middle section
Step 7. Grab a small section of hair from the left side of the head
Add it to the hair you are holding with your left hand.
Step 8. Weave it on the middle section
Step 9. Continue adding hair before braiding the sections
This way, you will incorporate the remaining hair into the braid.
The braid will be positioned in the center of the head, starting from the top to the nape of the neck
Step 10. Continue making the braid even after adding all the remaining hair
When you no longer have hair to braid, tie the end with an elastic.
Experiment with variations of this braid. You could make pigtails by dividing your hair into two sections with a comb and braiding them individually. You could also do a braid on one side of the head
Method 3 of 3: Fishtail Braid
Step 1. Brush your hair until there are no more knots
Step 2. Use a comb to divide the hair in half, into two large sections
Step 3. Divide each section into two parts, including one section of hair closer to the face and one closer to the nape of the neck
You will need to hold both sections on the left with your left hand and both sections on the right with your right hand. This braid has more sections than a French or traditional braid
Step 4. Slide the section on the right closest to the face over the middle section
Incorporate that hair into the bottom left section.
Step 5. Slide the leftmost section over the middle section
Incorporate it into the lower right section.
Step 6. Repeat this process, incorporating the outer right section with the inner left section
Then join the outer left section to the inner right section.
