Taking care of curly hair can be a real challenge if you don't know what products and accessories to use. A good conditioner and homemade packs are essential for this hair type.
Steps
Step 1. Look for a good conditioner that hydrates your hair
You can find different types at the supermarket, in herbal medicine (natural balms are often very nutritious) or in specialized stores (such as Acqua & Sapone or Tigotà).
Step 2. Spread conditioner all over your hair and try to gently remove knots
Use your hands or a wide-toothed comb. Start combing from the tips and then work your way up gradually. Let the conditioner soak in for about five minutes for added hydration.
Step 3. Make the last rinse with warm or cold water
This will reduce frizz and give your hair more shine. Do not completely rinse off the conditioner on the driest areas, such as the ends if you intend not to use any styling products. You can also choose to use a leave-in conditioner.
Step 4. Add a cream or serum to wet hair
Distribute it evenly and shape the curls with your hands.
Step 5. Protect your hair from the sun
You can wear a wide-brimmed hat or a scarf. Otherwise, look for a product that has sunscreen and spray it on your hair before you expose yourself to the sun. Alternatively, you can use a common conditioner and mix it with sunscreen before spreading it on your hair.
Step 6. Be aware that curls need to be treated differently depending on the season
In the summer, use products with a more liquid consistency so as not to suffocate the hair. It would also be recommended not to completely rinse the conditioner or mask to avoid frizz and increase the definition of the curls. In winter, the treatment should be the opposite. You should use richer, creamier products to promote hydration and eliminate dryness.
Advice
- Use a hair mask once a week for more defined curls.
- Trim your hair every two to four months to get rid of split ends. Ask your hairdresser not to use a razor or it will leave your tips damaged.
- It is necessary to cut the hair in the colder months as it dries out more easily and becomes brittle. It is equally important to do this in the warmer months when the sun, salt and chlorine can ruin the structure.
- Sulfates, such as ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc., are ingredients in many types of shampoos and can dry and damage curly hair. You could wash your hair without shampoo or use the co-washing technique, which is to say washing with conditioner only, just like many black women do. Remember that silicones aren't that bad, as long as you don't overdo the quantities. Also consider buying a sulfate-free shampoo and use it in moderation.
