Chemical peeling is a very effective method of exfoliating the skin, removing dead cells from the surface and leaving the skin soft and smooth. While many chemical peels are done by doctors, there are also home-made versions that use less potent chemicals, but with similar results. Once you have learned the correct method of preparing and applying these products, you will get the best results.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare your skin for the chemical peel
- If you are using products containing tretinoin such as Retin-A or Differin, stop using it at least a week before the peeling. Tretinoin is the acid form of vitamin A, which is often used for the treatment of acne or to minimize the appearance of small lines and wrinkles. These products have the potential to irritate the skin, which could affect the peeling result.
- Do a light exfoliation 24 hours before the treatment, using a delicate face scrub. After washing the skin, apply a pH solution to prepare the skin for peeling.
Step 2. Do a preliminary test on a small spot on the skin before applying the chemical peel
- A test on a limited area indicates the reaction that the skin will have to peeling. The test should be done on the forearm, or in a small area of skin under the ear, at the hairline. Leave the solution on for at least a minute before rinsing with water.
- Check the test result after 24 hours. If the skin appears normal, proceed with the rejuvenating treatment. If your skin appears irritated and red or sore, reduce the chemical concentration of the solution and take another test. If you have previously had signs of an allergic reaction, such as pimples or itching, try a lower concentration of the active ingredients (glycolic, salicidic, or trichloroacetic acid) in your peeling solution.
Step 3. Cleanse your face before applying the chemical peel
Use soap-free cleanser and water to keep the skin from drying out before peeling. Then, apply a mild astringent, such as hazelnut, or the preparatory solution included in the peeling kit
Step 4. Apply an even layer of the peeling solution to the skin
Use a cotton ball or swab for application, starting with the less sensitive areas of the skin around the forehead, chin and cheeks. Continue to apply the peel to the lower eyelid, nose and neck area. Make sure the solution is applied evenly, otherwise the results will be uneven
Step 5. Leave the peeling on the skin for the recommended time
Most peeling kits recommend no more than 1 or 2 minutes, depending on the type of peel and the concentration of chemicals contained in the solution. Look out for any signs of irritation. Although a slight sting is normal, if your skin starts to freeze or burn intensely, remove the solution immediately
Step 6. Remove the peel and apply a neutralizing solution. Br>
Many kits contain a neutralizing solution that interrupts the action of chemical agents, which thus stop continuing to burn the skin. However, if your kit does not include a neutralizing solution, it means that your peel has been created to stop its action after washing, without the need to use an additional solution
Warnings
- If the neutralizing substance is not included in the kit, to feel safer, you can create it by mixing baking soda with water.
- Do not leave the peel on the face for too long, otherwise the skin may be damaged and burned. Carefully observe the skin and the clock during application to benefit from all the benefits of the treatment without side effects.
