Melted marshmallows are essential for many recipes. You may need it to make icing, cake or muffins. The easiest way to melt them is to heat them in the microwave. Once ready, you can incorporate them into the doughs of your favorite recipes or use them to make marshmallow fudge.
Ingrediants
Prepare the Marshmallow Fondant
- Marshmallow
- Waterfall
- Solid vegetable fat
- Vanilla extract or food coloring
- Powdered sugar
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Melt the Marshmallows in the Microwave
Step 1. Get a microwave-safe bowl that is large enough to hold the marshmallows
Keep in mind that as they heat up they will expand, so you need to choose a container that is 3 or 4 times larger than their initial volume. Before continuing, turn the selected bowl upside down and look for the symbol that guarantees its use in the microwave:
- If there is a symbol of a dish with wavy lines on it, it means that you can use it in the microwave safely;
- The symbol, which only shows wavy lines, also indicates that this is a container suitable for use in the microwave oven.
Step 2. Place the marshmallows in the bowl
Do not fill it completely; if there are many marshmallows to be melted, divide them into different containers filling them up to a quarter full.
Step 3. Heat the marshmallows in the microwave for 30 seconds on maximum power
Place the bowl in the oven and close the door. Set the power to the maximum available level and start the microwave for 30 seconds.
The tureen must remain uncovered so that the heat can easily penetrate the marshmallows
Step 4. Remove the bowl from the microwave and mix the marshmallows
Grab it with oven mitts or a kitchen towel as it may be hot. Stir in the semi-dissolved marshmallows with a spoon or fork.
If some marshmallows have stuck to the sides of the bowl, peel them off and try to mix them to blend with the others
Step 5. Return the bowl to the microwave for another 30 seconds
After mixing them carefully, put them back in the oven. Check that the power is set to the maximum level, heat the marshmallows for another 30 seconds and then mix them thoroughly again.
Step 6. Continue heating the marshmallows at 30 second intervals until they are completely melted
You may have to repeat this several times until they are completely dissolved. Whenever you take them out of the microwave, mix them well.
Method 2 of 2: Make Marshmallow Fondant
Step 1. Place the water and marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl
Use 2 tablespoons (30ml) of water for every 450g of marshmallows to be melted. Before continuing, turn the bowl upside down and look for the symbol that guarantees its use in the microwave.
There must be a symbol of a plate with wavy lines on it or one that only features wavy lines. Both indicate that it is suitable for microwave use
Step 2. Heat the marshmallows for 30 seconds on maximum power
Put the bowl in the microwave and set the power to maximum. Set 30 seconds on the timer and keep an eye on the marshmallows until it's time to take them out of the oven to mix.
Grab the bowl with oven mitts or a kitchen towel as it may be hot
Step 3. Stir the marshamallows with a spoon lined with solid vegetable fat
Dip the spoon in the vegetable shortening before using it to mix so the marshmallows don't stick to the metal.
If there are marshmallows stuck to the sides of the bowl, peel them off and incorporate them into the others
Step 4. Repeat this process until the marshmallows are completely melted
Heat them at intervals of 30 seconds until they have reached the right consistency to make the fudge. Remember to mix well before returning the bowl to the oven.
The water and marshmallows must merge to form a very flexible compound, but not too liquid or watery
Step 5. Add the flavors and then mix
If you wish, you can flavor the dark chocolate to taste, for example with vanilla extract or a food coloring of your choice.
A few drops of extract or food coloring are enough. Pour them into the bowl and then mix the mixture with a spoon lined with vegetable shortening
Step 6. Pour 65g of powdered sugar into the bowl and mix it into the mixture
The icing sugar will add extra sweetness to the fondant. Again, incorporate it into the mixture by stirring with a spoon lined with vegetable fat. Have several spoons available and coat them from time to time with vegetable shortening to easily mix the mixture until it acquires the consistency of a dough.
Step 7. Work the fondant on a clean surface
Grease the table and hands with solid vegetable fat to be able to work the fudge easily. Add more powdered sugar as you work it as if it were a dough.
Keep adding the icing sugar until you get a firm ball
Step 8. Wrap the fudge in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight
Cover it with a thin layer of vegetable fat before wrapping it with plastic wrap. The next day, remove the foil and use the fondant to coat your cake.
