This article explains how to create fireworks in Minecraft. You can do this in all versions of the game, including PC, mobile and console editions.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Gathering Resources
Step 1. Make sure you have a crafting table available
You need one to create the components of the fireworks.
- You can make a crafting table with four wooden planks;
- If you want to use blue or green dye for your fireworks, you will also need a furnace.
Step 2. Learn what components are needed for a firework
To craft three rockets, you need one unit of paper and one unit of gunpowder; you also need a fireworks star, which you can build with one unit of gunpowder and one unit of dye, so that the rocket explodes.
Step 3. Kill some Creepers to find gunpowder
Creepers are the armless green monsters that hiss and explode when you get too close. For this reason, you have to be very aggressive when attacking them; if they start hissing, get out of there as soon as possible to avoid taking too much damage from the explosion.
- Usually you will have to hunt down Creepers at night. This is a dangerous activity, so make sure you have plenty of healing items (e.g. cooked food).
- Creepers don't always drop gunpowder. You will probably have to clear several of them to find a dust unit or two.
Step 4. Collect some sugar cane to make paper
Sugarcane is a tall light green plant that grows near water. You need three units to make three units of paper.
Step 5. Get some dye
To add a visual effect to your firework explosion, you need dye. In the world you can find the following colors:
- Red: collect any red flower, then place it on the crafting table;
- Yellow: collect any yellow out, then put it in the crafting table;
- Green: collect the cacti, then melt them in the furnace;
- Blue: dig some blocks of lapis lazuli, then melt them in the furnace. These are rocks with dark blue spots that are usually found in the depths of the earth.
Step 6. Find some fuel for the furnace
If you want to melt materials to get the dye, you need wood planks or charcoal to power the furnace.
Skip this step if you are only using red or yellow dye
Part 2 of 3: Create a Fireworks Star
Step 1. Open the creation table
Right-click on it (PC), press it (PE) or face it and press the left trigger (console). The creation table interface will open.
- If you prefer your firework to have no visual effect at the time of the explosion, skip to the next step;
- If you want to make green or blue dye, open the furnace.
Step 2. Put the material on the crafting table
Drag the object (such as the flower) to any of the boxes on the table. If the dye you chose is made by melting a material, put the item in the top box and the fuel in the bottom box instead.
- In Minecraft PE, press the material first, then the crafting table. If you need to melt the item, press it, press the "Input" box, then press the fuel and press the "Fuel" box.
- On console, press the right back button six times, select the "Dyes" tab, scroll down to choose the dye you prefer, then press TO or X. If you need to blend an object, select the dye and press Y or triangle, then repeat for fuel.
Step 3. Retrieve the dye
Click on it to select it. If you have melted a material to get it, hold down Shift and click on the dye, then exit the furnace and open the crafting table.
- In Minecraft PE, press the dye first, then your inventory;
- On console, the dye goes directly to the inventory when you create it. If you melted an item in the furnace, select it and press Y.
Step 4. Create the firework star
Place one unit of gunpowder in any space on the crafting grid, then place the dye in another empty space.
On console, you need to select the firework-shaped tab on the right side of the screen by repeatedly pressing one of the back buttons, then scroll down until you find the desired color and press TO or X.
Step 5. Get the star
Now that you have the star in your inventory, you can create the rocket itself.

Step 2. Put the card on the crafting table

Step 4. Put the star in the creation grid
You can put it in one of the empty squares of the grid. Skip this step if you prefer to make a rocket that doesn't explode.

- In Minecraft PE, hit rockets, then hit inventory.
- On console, press TO or X to create the rockets and put them directly in the inventory.
Advice
- You can use up to seven different stars when making a rocket. Each star will be added to the explosion; for example, if you use one blue, one green and one red star, the firework explosion will be green, blue and red.
- You can name the fireworks using the anvil.
- You can also add effects to fireworks stars. For example, using a diamond, the firework explosion will leave trails.
