Gengar is a unique Pokemon, because it is one of the few that evolves during an exchange. This means that to get a Gengar you will have to exchange a Haunter between two trainers; once traded, the Haunter will evolve into Gengar. It is important to learn how to trade Pokemon to not only get a Gengar, but to play Pokemon in general.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Capturing a Gastly or a Haunter
Gengar is the evolution of Haunter, and cannot be found around. This means that you will need to capture a Gastly or a Haunter and have it evolve into Gengar with a trade.
Step 1. Defeat Team Rocket in Heavenly City
You can do this after defeating Erika and earning your fourth medal. Defeating Giovanni and Team Rocket will give you the Spectrum Probe, which will allow you to see the Ghost Pokemon that inhabit the Wash City Pokemon Tower.
Step 2. Enter the Pokemon Tower
Now that you have the Ghost Probe, you can enter the tower and not have to flee when you encounter a Ghost Pokemon.
Step 3. Climb the tower
Once you enter the tower, proceed north and then east until you see a ladder. Climb up to reach the upper floor.
Step 4. Defeat Gary
Go north and you will find your rival Gary. You will have to face it. Your rival's team will change depending on the starting Pokemon you have chosen. Here are the possible combinations:
- Pidgeotto (LvL25), Kadabra (LvL20), Exeggcute (LvL22), Wartortle (LvL25), Growlithe (LvL23).
- Pidgeotto (LvL25), Kadabra (LvL20), Exeggcute (LvL23), Gyarados (LvL22), Charmeleon (LvL25).
- Pidgeotto (LvL25), Kadabra (LvL20), Ivysaur (LvL25), Gyarados (LvL23), Growlithe (LvL22).
Step 5. Keep climbing
After beating Gary go east, where you will find another ladder. Climb up to reach the upper floor.
Step 6. Look for a Haunter
The third floor is the first where you will find wild Pokemon. The odds of encountering a Haunter on each floor range from 1 to 15%; on the higher floors the odds will be greater. It is much easier to catch a Gastly, but the evolutionary process will require more in that case.
- As an alternative to catching a Haunter, you can catch a Gastly and evolve it into a Haunter at level 25. Remember that both Gastly and Haunter are Ghost-type Pokemon, making them immune to Normal, Fighting, and Ground attacks.
- If you've decided to catch a Gastly, you'll need to evolve it into a Haunter before proceeding.
Step 7. Capture the Pokemon
Weaken the Haunter or Gastly and then start throwing Pokeballs. Gastlys are very easy to catch and shouldn't bother you, but Haunters may require a few more orbs.
Part 2 of 2: Evolving the Haunter
Step 1. Prepare for the trade
Once you have captured a Haunter, or have evolved your Gastly, head to the nearest Pokemon Center and go up to the second floor.
If this is your first time up to the second floor, a character will briefly explain the trading system to you
Step 2. Start the exchange process
Talk to the third character and choose "Trading Center", then save your game. Remember, you will need to have someone to exchange with a Gameboy Advance link cable or wireless network connection. Make sure your devices are connected before proceeding.
Step 3. Choose your exchange partner
Choose to become the leader of a group or join a group. Start the exchange and press "Ok"; you will reach a room where you will see the other player.
The other player will have to select the opposite option. For example, if you have chosen "Become leader", the other player will have to choose "Join group"
Step 4. Start the exchange
Sit on the chair and press "A" to initiate the trade.
Step 5. Choose your Haunter and trade it with your friend
When the trade is complete, the Haunter will immediately evolve into Gengar. Have your friend return the Gengar by repeating the exchange process.
