Like common sense, education is not as widespread as it used to be. Nonetheless, polite social behavior remains an important component of getting along with other people. And even when a conversation is interesting, in some cases you will have to finish it before the other person is done. Here are some ways to walk away with courtesy.
Steps
Step 1. Watch your body language carefully
Signs that a person is ready to leave include wandering gaze, one small step away from you, and shorter and shorter responses to what you say. Other behaviors that tell you that the other person wants to go is putting something in a bag or wearing a jacket or sweater.
Step 2. Wait for a break and offer a handshake
When the other person responds, say, "It was nice talking to you" or "I have plans, but I really enjoyed our conversation. See you later."
Step 3. Apologize
"I don't want to hold you back / I see you're busy, it was nice to see you."
Step 4. Say you need to go
You can say, "I'm sorry, but I have plans for the day." Remain polite but firm.
Step 5. Smile and say hello
This will show that you are friendly. You might add that you are happy that you had a chance to speak.
Step 6. If you want to meet the other person again, suggest a meeting in the near future
Be specific. "See you Wednesday morning?" is better than "We must meet soon."
