Being Goth is a way of life that starts from the music you listen to through to the untied military boots you wear. But finding the right way to dress can be difficult at a time when everyone is wearing Abercrombie. Read on to learn more.
Steps
Step 1. Be comfortable with the Goth
Don't change overnight. Gradually feel comfortable with this style and its subculture.
Step 2. Determine the style you are aiming for
Some people love the romantic look with velvet jackets, laces and period items, while others prefer punk, with tight pants and collars full of spiked studs, and still others are cyber futuristic with aviator goggles. Organize your wire extensions, latex and big industrial boots. There is not just one Goth style but several ways.
Step 3. Browse photos and movies for inspiration
Shop around and capture what you would like to add to your wardrobe. Avoid copying anyone unless they are dressed up as a Halloween witch.
Step 4. Go to the second-hand clothing store for cheap and original clothes
Even the most popular stores have basic clothes (like pinstripe trousers, black sweaters, and the like), which can enrich your wardrobe without buying expensive stuff in specialty stores.
Step 5. DIY your clothes or at least consider modifying them with some colored lace, make a hairstyle to pick up using bows, etc
You can find real bargains in cheap stores, but the cheapest clothes you can buy are the ones in your closet. Unleash your imagination; be artistic and unique.
Step 6. Try on tight fitting clothes (both boys and girls)
Guys, don't try to wear tight-fitting clothes unless you want to look a little feminine. Then, always make sure it's your size and fits you, if you are not skinny or fit, this type of clothing is not for you. Be careful, wearing tight pants you might be confused for an emo, but get it into your head that emo guys wear women's jeans, Goths and rockers who listen to Death music don't choose that stuff, they buy cheap black jeans and tweak them so that are adherent or buy them from Lip-service, DogPile clothing or Tripp Clothing. If that doesn't suit you, feel free to wear regular or loose fitting clothes.
Step 7. Put on band shirts
Try t-shirts with band names, such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Christian Death, and Bauhaus (make sure they're bands you really like not because they're Goth, otherwise you'd make a fool of yourself). Many Goths and Deathrockers cut their own boat shirts, so they have an open shoulder, or cut the sleeves off.
Step 8. Consider the boots
Many Goths wear high, black leather boots. There are many different styles of boots, just shop around and choose a style you like! Or no, boots aren't essential, being Goth means being original. Either way, some romantic goths wear dress shoes every day.
Step 9. The Hair
Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to over-dye your hair or style it too much. There are many who represent the quintessential Goth fashion yet leave their hair their natural color. If you decide to dye your hair, start by realizing which color suits you best. Not all colors look good! Also look at the hair styles that are used by various goth bands for inspiration. Some like to crest, pick them up or mess them up. Remember, goth is an offshoot of punk, so many goths back their hair or mohawk or have big frizzy ends or whatever they can think of. No matter what color you choose or how you style them, remember it's all about expressing yourself !! So, be creative!
Step 10. Coordinate the colors
Black is the only color that exists in goth. Reds, purples, blues, greens, and dark whites are often used as accompanying colors to the main color. Cybers or industrialists accept phosphorescent colors but goth is what you want it to be, not what others tell you.
Step 11. Wear the right makeup
Goth makeup is often dramatic: heavy black eyeliner, red lips, and heavy dark eyeshadow. Colors like black, red and purple around and on the eyelids. Stretching the eyeliner line is cliché but it's beautiful. Black lipstick is less popular than in the past. In any case, there are no rules.
Step 12. Complete your look with accessories
You could wear a neck strap, gloves, bracelets, aviator goggles, bat earrings, bows etc.
Advice
- Be yourself, don't follow trends like other Goths do.
- Few quality items are much better than a wardrobe full of things you hate. Think about quality and not quantity. Get basic clothing: skirts, pants, boots, jackets and then build something from here. Don't buy anything unless you like it and it fits perfectly. You need to look and feel confident, which is essential for self-esteem and defense of your style.
- Being Goth is not just about clothes, although dark clothing has a lot to do with this lifestyle; mostly it is based on how you act. A goth is excluded from society but at the same time is more in it than anyone else. They appreciate diversity and don't judge anyone. And even if they do, they try to ignore first-time sensations and try to get to know that person before judging.
- Goth is many things. They are pacifists but not afraid to say what they think. They are sensations, emotions… Black is the color that represents all this. It is being alone, different, unique, etc.
- Be creative. Try to differentiate your look or uniform. Don't try to be a stereotype or you will be labeled as a poser.
- Blacks can have shades of blue, red, green or brown. It goes without saying that blacks reds and greens shouldn't be worn together.
- Try to learn how to behave like a goth, listen to music, read genre literature and try to go to goth clubs.
Warnings
- There are a lot of androgynous, so you have to get used to them. It doesn't mean someone is gay, bi or whatever. It is a fashion, not to judge a person's orientation by clothing alone. Be respectful.
- Some people may treat you differently just because of your appearance. You don't have to care what they think.
- There is a difference between goth and emo. The goth community is aware of this.
