Brushes and combs, like any other beauty tool, get dirty over time. In these cases, it takes a good cleaning. Usually, they can be washed using a mild detergent and a toothbrush. If you haven't done this for a long time, you may want to disinfect them with vinegar or denatured alcohol. When you're done, they'll be neat and clean again.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Performing a Basic Cleaning
Step 1. Remove the hair with your fingers
First, pull out as much hair as possible by pulling it with your fingers. You should take them off quite easily, so try to be careful. If any hair gets stuck, use a toothpick to detach it and then remove it with your fingers.
You may also want to purchase a tool designed to remove hair from brushes. Alternatively, you can also try using a long, fine-toothed comb or the end of a rat tail comb
Step 2. Mix a mild cleanser with warm water
No harsh detergents are needed to clean a brush or comb. Dish soap or shampoo will work fine. Add some in a bowl full of warm water. There is no precise quantity to respect, but usually it takes very little to clean these utensils.
Step 3. Scrub with a toothbrush
First, soak the brush in the cleaner for about 15 minutes to loosen the encrustations. Then, wet a toothbrush you don't use and gently wipe it between the bristles of the brush or the teeth of the comb. You should also clean the side areas as they accumulate residue in the long run when they come into contact with the hair.
However, if it is a brush with a wooden handle, avoid wetting it from the side. Water could damage it
Step 4. Rinse
Once the wash is finished, you should proceed with rinsing. Put the brush under the tap and keep the hot water running until it runs clean.
Afterward, allow the brush or comb to air dry. If you are in a hurry, you can also use a paper towel or cloth or turn the hair dryer on at medium temperature, keeping it a few centimeters away
Part 2 of 3: Do a Deep Clean and Disinfect
Step 1. Use vinegar or denatured alcohol for plastic combs
This way, you can disinfect them without risking damaging them. Fill a large enough cup or bowl with vinegar or denatured alcohol. Leave the comb to soak for 10 minutes. Then, take it off and rinse it under running water.
Step 2. Disinfect the upper end of the brush with vinegar
You need to soak it to destroy the germs it has accumulated. Get a large enough container and prepare a mixture consisting of one part of white vinegar and another of water. Then, insert the top of the brush and leave it for 20 minutes. When you're done, rinse it under running water.
Step 3. Let it air dry
It is best to air dry the brush and comb on a cloth. The time required varies by model. Some take a few hours, while others may need a whole night.
Step 4. Clean the handle
The handles also come into contact with numerous germs. Therefore, you shouldn't neglect them during the disinfection process. The cleaning method depends on the material they are made of, but you can use denatured alcohol on most surfaces to get rid of any kind of residue. Then wipe the handle with a damp cloth.
However, if it is a wooden brush, it is best to avoid harsh cleaners, such as denatured alcohol
Part 3 of 3: Take Precautions
Step 1. Clean the bristles gently
When cleaning the bristles of a hairbrush, proceed slowly with gentle movements. If you are too aggressive, they may bend or break.
Step 2. Quickly dry the cushion base
The brushes that have a bearing base must not remain wet for too long. Avoid soaking them to disinfect them and just rub them gently with water and a mild detergent.
Step 3. Do not let the wooden brushes soak
If they have a wooden handle or structure, they should never be wet because, being made of a material that is very sensitive to water damage, they can easily be damaged if they remain soaked. Just brush them with a toothbrush and detergent.
