Feeling upset can be a horrible feeling. Problems seem to overwhelm us and being able to think rationally to decide how to act seems really difficult. This article will help you find solutions without panicking, and distract you until you feel ready to face your problems again.
Steps
Step 1. Make a written list of the things that have troubled you
As you write them, you may realize they aren't all that bad. Try to find a solution for each of them, even if it seems silly or impossible at the moment. This process may help you find a more realistic one.
Step 2. Go for a walk or exercise
Try to focus on what you are doing, not on what ails you. This is the only short-term solution to calm down until you feel ready to start thinking rationally again.
Step 3. Do something to distract yourself
For example, try watching television, reading a book or playing a video game (of course if you don't feel upset anymore), or go to the cinema, listen to your favorite music on your iPod or talk to a friend, in person or on the phone.. These are all great ways to be able to forget something.
Step 4. If you feel angry or want to vent your frustration, hit a pillow or other soft, saggy object (of course not a person or an animal, no matter how favorable they are
)
Step 5. Go to a quiet, relaxing place where you can calm down and calmly reflect on your problems
Step 6. Surround yourself with pleasant and reassuring things
Listen to your favorite tunes, and remember that the purpose is to calm you down, not to make you more agitated. Pamper yourself with something delicious. Read a good book.
Step 7. Discuss the problem with a trusted person or family member
If you don't want anyone to know, you can try telling your pet about it, it could prove to be highly therapeutic. But remember that only humans can give you advice, and that sometimes advice can be of great help.
Step 8. Try to meditate
You don't need to be a seasoned yogi to sit down and focus on your breath. Try not to think about anything else and just clear your mind.
Step 9. Release your emotions
Go to an empty and quiet place and scream your feelings. Have a good cry. Bark if you feel the need. Don't dump your negative feelings on people or animals!
Step 10. Think of funny moments in your life where you laughed a lot or felt extremely good
They will help you forget what happened and you will soon feel better.
