Each of us has our favorite technique for cooking hot dogs. You can boil frankfurters, grill them, sauté them, and even bake them. You can season them with mustard and ketchup, or be a little more creative and add onions, pickles, or whatever other ingredient you like. This article will give you the instructions you need to grill, boil, and bake your hot dogs.
Ingrediants
- Würstel
- Condiments like ketchup, mustard and pickles
- Fillings such as chopped onions, red pepper, grated cheese and lettuce
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Grilled
Step 1. Turn on the barbecue
This technique gives hot dogs a great smoky aftertaste and many believe it's the best. Any kind of barbecue is fine, so light the charcoal, gas or wood beforehand.
- While the grill heats up, prepare the sandwiches and toppings. Hot dogs are tastier as soon as they are cooked.
- Make sure one side of the grill is colder than the other. You can check this by putting more charcoal on one side. If you have a gas barbecue, you should control the heat with the special knobs.
Step 2. Place the hot dogs on the cooler side of the grill
Place them diagonally to create the typical streaks.
Step 3. Grill the frankfurters for about 1-2 minutes on each side
Remember that all frankfurters are made with pre-cooked meat, so your goal will be to give them a nice color, as well as making them crunchy on the outside and warm on the inside.
- Turn all the frankfurters often until they are cooked evenly across their entire surface.
- If they look warm to you but haven't reached the right color yet, move them to the direct heat part of the grill. Be very focused and quick at this stage. As soon as the sausages are ready, remove them from the grill and arrange them on a plate.
Step 4. Serve them accompanying them with everything you need:
the classic hot dog sandwich, mustard, ketchup, sauces to taste, onion, tomato, cheese and sauerkraut.
Method 2 of 5: Boil it
Step 1. Fill a large pot with enough water to cover all the frankfurters
To cook 4 large frankfurters you will need about 1.5-2 liters of water.
Step 2. Bring the water to a boil
Put the pot on high heat and wait for the water to boil before continuing.
Step 3. Add the frankfurters to the boiling water
Put them one at a time with the help of some kitchen tongs.
Step 4. Bring them to a simmer
Lower the heat and cook for 3-6 minutes, depending on how doneness you prefer.
- If you want a softer hot dog, cook it for 3-4 minutes.
- If you prefer a crisper hot dog, wait up to 5-6 minutes.
Step 5. Take them out of the water and serve them
Remember to gently pat them dry with kitchen paper before putting them in the bun. Accompany them with your favorite sauces such as mustard, ketchup and other fillings such as tomatoes, onion, cheese or sauerkraut.
Method 3 of 5: In the Microwave
Step 1. Place the frankfurters in a microwave-safe bowl
Use a glass or plastic one and not a metal one. Make sure it is deep enough to hold the hot dogs.
Step 2. Cover the frankfurters with water
The water may boil and come out of the bowl, so make sure it stays at least about 2.5cm below the rim.
Step 3. Cook the hot dogs
Place the bowl in the microwave, close the door and cook for 2-3 minutes on maximum power. If the frankfurters are very large, it may take longer.
Step 4. Remove the bowl from the oven and drain the water
Wait until the frankfurters have cooled for about 30 seconds and then dry them. Proceed carefully, they are hot when they come out of the oven.
Step 5. Serve the hot dogs
After drying them, place them in sandwiches and serve them with simple mustard and ketchup. This is the quickest way to make your hot dogs.
Method 4 of 5: Baked
Step 1. Preheat the oven to about 200 ° C
With this technique you will get dark and juicy frankfurters. They will taste similar to those cooked on the barbecue, but without the hassle of starting a fire.
Step 2. Make an incision on the sausages lengthwise
Use a sharp knife and be very careful as hot dogs are quite slippery. Don't cut them completely, you just need an escape route for the steam that will form inside.
Step 3. Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet or pan
They will release their juices as they cook, so you can line the pan with aluminum foil to keep it from getting too dirty.
Step 4. Cook them for 15 minutes
Wait until the skin turns brown and the frankfurters begin to curl.
- If you want a crispy hot dog you can turn on the grill.
- Add the cheese and return the frankfurters to the oven for another minute if you like.
Step 5. Serve them
Carefully, take them out of the oven and put them in sandwiches. They are excellent with chilli and cheese.
Method 5 of 5: Fried
Step 1. Cut some sausages
You can fry them whole, but the flavor is even better if they are cut into single bites. In this way, the surface will be greater and it will become deliciously crunchy. Take two or three frankfurters - depending on how many you need - and cut them into small pieces that you can fry.
Step 2. Heat some oil in a pan
Place the pan on the stove over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to collect about 1 cm thick on one side. Let it warm up completely. To find out if it's hot enough to fry hot dogs, drop a crumb of bread into the hot oil. If it starts to sizzle immediately, it means it's ready.
Step 3. Pour the sausage pieces into the pan
Do this carefully, as they may sizzle and splash the hot oil right away. Spread them in a single layer and let them cook. Avoid putting too many, otherwise you risk that they will not cook evenly.
Step 4. Turn the pieces as they cook
Use tongs to carefully turn them after a minute or two when one side begins to darken. Continue frying them for another minute or two, until they are cooked to the right point according to your preferences.
Remember that the frankfurters are pre-cooked so you can cook them however you want without having to worry about the central part staying raw
Step 5. Drain the sausage pieces
Use tongs to transfer them from the pan to a plate covered with a paper towel, so it absorbs the oil as the hot dog pieces cool.
Step 6. Serve them
They're delicious with a mix of fried onions and peppers, cheese, or even on their own with some mustard and ketchup.
Advice
- Try varying the cooking time indicated on the package according to your personal taste.
- It's a great idea to make small incisions on the frankfurters before microwaving them to prevent steam from getting trapped inside them.
