Burp, in medical jargon "belching", is your body's expression that releases small amounts of air you ingest when you drink or eat. Learning how to make a monstrous one on command is one way to rock with friends. However, it would also be wise to master the art of silent burp for when you are attending a wedding or other formal occasion in the future. Here are some tips for learning some techniques.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Mega Burp
Step 1. Upload your burp
Everything always starts with a good meal. To get a great result you need to make sure that your stomach is very active. Drink and eat as fast as you can, in large bites, in order to swallow more air.
- Soft drinks, beer and any fizzy liquids with lots of bubbles are for you. The bubbles in these drinks release carbon dioxide. The faster you drink, the quicker your stomach fills with gas. If you want great results, drink with a straw.
- If you feel like it, take a "shotgun", that is, drink all the liquid (usually from a can) in one go.
- The gases contained in the food and drinks you have swallowed will form the huge burp you will produce. If you want to get horrible combinations of smells too, try different foods!
Step 2. Stand up
If you can't, at least try to sit up straight. The gases go upward and if you are not upright there is little chance that they will come out of your stomach and into your throat.
Step 3. Get moving
Do a few hops to stir up the gas in your stomach. If you've been drinking fizzy drinks, they'll fizz and release gas just like you're shaking a can of soda.
Be careful as moving on a full stomach can create nausea. Don't overdo it, seeing you hopping can be fun, but a gagging certainly isn't
Step 4. When you feel the burp coming, open your mouth and tilt your head back
Prepare your abdominal muscles because you will need them in the next step.
Opening the mouth serves two purposes. First, it makes you look even more gross; second, it makes you make a louder and deeper noise
Step 5. During the burp, contract your abdominal muscles by squeezing your stomach
It will take some practice to do this. The goal is to squeeze the stomach to force gas and produce the burp with a single loud push. You must use your diaphragm and abdominal muscles to push firmly, but not violently. If you do it right you will emit a loud "burp". Practice until you can easily.
If you want it to last longer, try to release the gas gradually by applying less pressure. It will not be easy to find the right balance. If you push too hard the burp will be too short, if you push too little you will make a faint noise
Method 2 of 3: Instant Burp
Step 1. Begin by filling your lungs with air
It is not necessary to inhale deeply - just breathe normally. With this method, you swallow the air directly from the lungs, instead of doing it through food.
Step 2. Shut your mouth and plug your nose
You don't have to inhale any more air. But don't choke, if at some point you have to breathe, do it! You certainly don't want to go down in history as the one who died trying to burp!
Step 3. Breathe out the air, hold it in your mouth and swallow it with saliva
It will probably take you some practice. Try to swallow as if you have food in your mouth. Try to feel the mouthfuls of air flowing down the esophagus and then into the stomach. Basically, you are transferring the air from the lungs to the stomach to the point where it exits the throat with a burp.
Step 4. Repeat this process several times
When swallowing, put the tip of your tongue behind your lips to swallow even more air. Then try burping normally. It is not easy for beginners, at first you should "force it". Practice swallowing air until you master the technique. Soon you will be able to mortify your friends on command.
Step 5. As you burp, contract your abdominal muscles
Also for this you will have to practice, the process is identical to that explained in the previous method. Use your abdominal muscles and diaphragm to make a more powerful sound.
Method 3 of 3: Delicate Burp
Step 1. Have a light meal
This technique is used when you have to burp, but you want to do it as quietly as possible (and it is mandatory in luxury and high-class dinners). This step is for preventive purposes: little food and few drinks mean small burps.

Step 2. When you need to burp, close your mouth
Even if you can't fully control it, the closed mouth will allow you to limit the noise.
Step 3. Let the gases escape from the nose
Burps emitted in this way are almost completely silent. This is because the upper part of the esophagus does not vibrate the way it does when you burp out of your mouth. The noise produced by the nose will not seem that different from a normal exhalation, although the smell remains.
Try not to have a stuffy nose or your burp won't know where to get out
Step 4. Hold one hand over your nose so the air will dissipate
That way you allow the burp to be as discreet as possible - unless the smell makes you pass out!
Step 5. Alternatively, try to burp with your mouth closed
Cover it with your hand or closed fist to muffle the sound. When you're done, open your mouth and let the gases out.
Pretending to yawn is a great way to open your mouth, just make sure there's not another burp ready to come out
Advice
- In some cultures, belching after a meal is considered a sign of good manners, because it expresses appreciation for the dishes just eaten. On the contrary, in other cultures it is considered rudeness. If you're overseas, ask the locals or a few seasoned travelers before burping into some fancy restaurant.
- These instructions don't work for everyone, but if you have gas near your throat, try yawning.
- Never force a burp or you will end up sick. Sometimes it takes a while, be patient.
- A burp could smell like the foods you've eaten, combining them all together.
Warnings
- When you burp, you need to make sure the people around you don't find it offensive. If you can't control yourself, a disgusting burp could ruin a first date.
