Help save the planet, recycle old flannel sheets, avoid toxic dioxins, bleach and other chemicals found in disposable sanitary pads.
Many women are allergic to some of the chemicals found in disposable products such as disposable tampons or menstrual cups.
Steps
Step 1. Use a traditional disposable tampon as a template
This will be used to make the core of the absorbent. We will call this piece A.
Step 2. Trace an approx. 1 cm seam allowance around your model and the wings as well
These wings should be wide enough to meet and overlap slightly under the crotch of your underwear. This will be the outside of the bearing. We will call it piece B.
Step 3. Wash and remove the flannel
The softer the better… it will make contact with your butt after all!
Step 4. Cut two pieces B and 3-5 of piece A for each pad
Step 5. Match the obverse with the obverse (upside down)
Sew the two parts of piece B together, leaving a space of 3cm to turn it sideways. You may need to use scissors to make a series of small clips and notches around the curved tips to flatten it properly when you turn it straight. Flatten with an iron.
Step 6. Join 3 to 5 pieces A on top of each other and slide them through the space left on the outside of the pad to make the core of the tampon
Step 7. Secure the core by sewing around it on the straight side of the pad
Step 8. Sew the blank space left earlier
Step 9. Try the tampon on a pair of underwear
Wrap the wings around the underwear and mark where they overlap under the crotch.
Step 10. Sew small pieces of Velcro onto the wings to lock them overlapping
Advice
- Make the part that remains in contact with your skin in fleece, so that you do not feel the humidity (fleece lets liquids through but does not retain humidity). Using a fabric that is not white will help hide the stains.
- Make a thin bottom layer of waterproof fabric to make the pad 100% leak proof. For example, you can use waterproof bibs. They are sold in savings packs.
- You can wash the pads at a high temperature to kill bacteria - soak them to get rid of stains. Bleach removes stains but does not kill germs except at 60 ° C or higher in the washing machine, and it can also weaken the waterproof layer.
- You can use any type of sanitary napkin as a template, depending on what you want to make.

To prevent it from slipping you can
- Attach the velcro in the outer area of the slip and the less abrasive part on the corresponding side of the pad. Prepare several Velcro briefs to use during your period.
- Sew the inactive part of two safety pins to the bottom of the pad so that it is pinned to the slip.
- Wash the tampon in cold water immediately after use or soak it in cold water overnight. You can use water for plants, as it contains a high percentage of iron. If you are away from home, seal it in an airtight bag and rinse it off when you get home.
