Sweat is a normal reaction of the body and is intended to cool the body in hot weather, during exercise, or even in times of stress and anxiety. However, having sweaty armpits or sweat stains on clothes can be annoying and embarrassing. Some people sweat more than others due to a condition known as hyperhidrosis. Whatever the causes of excessive sweating, this article will offer you some helpful tips for minimizing underarm sweat and ideas for not staining your clothes.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Minimize Sweat
Step 1. Use an antiperspirant deodorant
Antiperspirant deodorants block the sweat glands by preventing the production of sweat for a set period of time. On the market, you can find latest generation deodorants with a "clinical" or "enhanced" formula, containing the same active ingredients as other deodorants, such as aluminum hydrochloride, but in higher quantities. The percentage of active ingredient present determines the effectiveness of the product, so it is likely that you will have to try different deodorants before finding the one that's right for you.
- For best results, put on deodorant on dry skin before going to sleep.
- Keep in mind that even so-called "natural" products contain aluminum, however, the other ingredients are gentler on the skin.
- The classic deodorants, unlike the antiperspirants, do not reduce sweat, but contain ingredients that cover or prevent the formation of bad odors. If you want to stop sweating, choose "antiperspirant" deodorants.
Step 2. Discuss possible remedies with your doctor
If the antiperspirant is not effective, there are other treatments to prevent excessive sweating in the armpits, for example:
- Specific antiperspirants prescribed by the doctor.
- Other therapies include: MiraDry, a state-of-the-art machine that, by exploiting its electromagnetic properties, destroys the sweat glands for a very long time.
- Botox injections directly into the armpits.
Step 3. Avoid substances that cause sweat
Some foods and drinks can make us sweat more (for example, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, packaged foods and hot drinks). Additionally, excessive consumption of niacin - vitamin B3 - (or even minimal amounts for sensitive individuals) can cause excessive sweating.
Don't avoid drinking water to prevent sweat! Your body needs fluids to function properly; they also help cool the body by reducing sweating
Step 4. Consider treatments to reduce anxiety
If you suffer from "tension sweat," that is, if you sweat a lot under stress, in addition to following the previous suggestions, talk to your doctor to find other remedies if you think you are suffering from anxiety.
Part 2 of 2: Managing Sweaty Armpits
Step 1. Wear protection under your clothes
When there is no remedy to prevent sweat, clothing protectors are the ideal solution to hide stains. These are absorbent pads to put on the armpits to prevent stains and to control odors. Various models are available on the market, disposable or washable, to be attached directly to the skin or fabric, or with straps.
- You can buy the pads online or in the lingerie department of stores.
- You can even make them yourself at home.
Step 2. Avoid non-breathable fabrics
Some fabrics, such as silk, polyester, rayon, and nylon, promote the formation of sweat. Instead, wear cotton, linen, or wool items.
Step 3. Wear clothes that hide sweat
For example, put a T-shirt under clothing, such as sweatshirts or jackets, or layered clothing to keep sweat stains out of sight.
Sweat stains are most noticeable on light-colored fabrics, so go for dark colors
Step 4. Buy anti-sweat clothes
There are many undergarments or high-tech fabrics on the market that prevent perspiration from forming.
