Was Fido sprayed by a skunk? There are several methods you can try to get rid of the bad smell. The idea that tomato juice is effective is an old rumor. It is not wrong, because the acid in tomatoes is useful, but it is not enough. Here are the remedies to try to get rid of it completely.
Steps
Step 1. Wet your four-legged friend with a watering hose
Skunk sprays are based on an organic oil not too different from the one that drips when cooking certain foods, so you will need a tear-free shampoo to get rid of it.
Step 2. Put Fido in a baby bathtub and tie him up; maybe, do it in the garden
If you really have to do this at home, spread oilcloth or plastic on the bathroom floor. It will create a lot of clutter and your furry friend will not like the experience. You will need to use both hands, or you will find yourself chasing a stinking dog all over the house or garden.
Step 3. Wet it completely with white vinegar
Make sure it is absorbed well by the skin. You will need to protect your eyes and let it sit for several minutes. This way, you will get rid of most of the oil. Afterward, rinse it off. If you can, do it outside, then let it shake off the excess water. Finally, you can take him inside to bathe him as usual.
Step 4. Place your four-legged friend in a tub that you have filled with lukewarm, not hot water, and let him soak
Cleanse it with a shampoo, creating a lather and massaging it as much as possible. Rinse and repeat. You may need to do this two or three times. Focus on the area where it was sprayed the most, but wash it thoroughly thoroughly.
Step 5. Be patient and loving as you do this
Your dog may not be overjoyed, but don't imprint it in his brain that every bath will be so traumatic.
Method 1 of 1: Alternative Methods
Step 1. Take a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup of baking soda and a couple of tablespoons of liquid soap
Hydrogen peroxide and sodium bicarbonate are mixed to neutralize the bad smell, while soap is more of a vehicle to be able to transform the solution into a "shampoo".
Step 2. Mix the three ingredients and wash your furry friend
Make sure you work the solution all over your skin, taking extra care when washing the muzzle area (it would be better to use a sponge in this case). Cover your eyes with a dry cloth while you wash the area. Don't let the mixture get into them. Rinse and repeat. Finally, do a final rinse.
Step 3. Be patient
It may take a day or two for the bad smell to clear up.
Advice
- The bad smell may not go away completely. Once it is absorbed by the skin and coat, it is almost impossible to eliminate it completely.
- If the odor persists, call your vet so they can recommend a different shampoo.
- If you can, take him to the dog groomer as soon as he dries. Tell him what happened. You can use deodorant on smelly areas of your skin or coat.
