This article describes how to hold and use a kayak paddle. The technique with which you use this tool affects the movement of the boat and the amount of energy you need to use.
Steps
Step 1. Learn the structure of the paddle
Unlike the one used for the canoe, the kayak model has two blades (or leaves) connected to the ends of the handle. The handle is the portion you grab, while the paddles are the ones you dip into the water to propel yourself forward.
Step 2. Hold the paddle with both hands in the center of the handle, so that they are about 40 cm apart
Step 3. Make sure the tool is pointing in the right direction
Beginners make the common mistake of holding the paddle upside down on first attempts. You may not notice a big difference between the two lines, but in reality this detail has a big impact on the power of each stroke; face the concave or smooth surface towards you.
Step 4. Hold the paddle facing the right way
Many models are asymmetrical, which means that there is one side that needs to be held up and another down. It is important to use the tool appropriately for how it was designed; the upper profile is more horizontal than the lower one which tends to be rounded. Sometimes, there is even a horizontal writing on the paddle; make sure that the words are straight and not upside down, by doing this it is easier to remember how to hold it correctly.
Step 5. Check that the knuckles are aligned with the leaves
Step 6. Hold the paddle approximately 30cm from your body
Step 7. Know your dominant grip
If you are right-handed, it corresponds to the right hand; vice versa, to the left if you are left handed. When performing a movement with the paddle, let the tool rotate in the "weak hand" so that each blade enters the water smoothly. The dominant grip does not change position once the paddle is grasped.
Step 8. When kayaking, push hard using the paddle to go faster
Also be sure to insert the shovel deep into the water.
