Crested geckos are great fun. They are native to New Caledonia and were thought to be extinct at one point. These geckos mainly eat crickets, mealworms, and mashed fruit. They were once an endangered species, but now millions of people keep them as pets. Here's how to take care of a specimen.
Steps
Step 1. Get a terrarium (minimum 40 liters)
Terrariums are like cages, except they are made of glass, and inside they contain plastic plants and substrate. The substrate is at the bottom, the earth. Be careful, though, as geckos can die if they ingest the coconut substrate. The safest substrate to use is by far a mixture of kitchen paper and newspaper. You can, however, use other types of fibers, such as "eco-earth", "astroturf" and sphagnum moss.
Step 2. Set up a terrarium
Your gecko needs a home! In the terrarium there should be: a water bowl, a food bowl, the substrate, many plastic plants, a branch.
Step 3. Get a spray bottle and a hygrometer
Their cage should be humid and geckos get water from this drizzle, normally, not from the water bowl. The water bowl is for emergencies only. You need to spray the terrarium once a day. After using the sprayer the humidity should be at least 80%. The humidity should drop to no less than 40% before spraying again.
Step 4. Keep temperatures between 21 and 26 ° C
Temperatures above 29 and below 18 ° C cause large amounts of stress and can quickly kill your pet.
Step 5. Get the gecko
If you are getting more than one, it is best to get two separate cages unless the geckos are the same size, are both female, or there is a male and female. You absolutely cannot put two males in the same cage. Males are VERY territorial! Just remember, hosting a male and female together can easily cause them to reproduce, and is not recommended unless you have done a lot of research on this before. Breeding animals without specific care can lead to calcium crashes and the death of your animals.
Step 6. Do not pick up your gecko for 2 weeks after buying it, this will allow it to acclimate and reduce the stress caused by the change of environment
After 2 weeks try to hold your pet for a few minutes a day, and once he is comfortable with you you can gradually increase the handling issues.
Step 7. Feed your gecko the right food
The repashy CGD is a complete diet, and is the best food available on the market at the moment. Do not feed him baby food. Leave the CGD in the cage for up to two days at a time, swapping it for freshly prepared CGD after the second night.
Step 8. Once a week you can feed him crickets, which you will have provided with a diet rich in proteins and vitamins

Advice
- Place lots of plants for your crested gecko to climb on.
- Avoid certain types of substrate, as your gecko may eat them and become choked or obstructed.
- Geckos may lose their tails if stressed. It makes a lot of sense, but your gecko is fine if it loses its tail, mine doesn't and has no problem. But it will never grow back.
- Over the years, you will learn what your gecko wants.
- If your gecko is not eating or running out of steam, take him to a veterinarian who is experienced with reptiles right away.
