This article explains how to trace an HP laptop model. You can use this code to identify your device model in case you need to contact a service center, ask for information from technical support or to be able to purchase a new hardware component (for example the battery) that is compatible with the computer.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use the System Information Dialog
Step 1. Press the key combination ⊞ Win + R
The Windows "Run" window will appear.
If you are using a computer running Windows 7 or later, you can click the "Start" button with the right mouse button and choose the option Run from the menu that will appear.
Step 2. Type the msinfo32 command in the "Open" field of the "Run" window
Step 3. Click the OK button
The Windows "System Information" dialog box will appear showing a detailed summary of all the technical specifications of the computer.
Step 4. Find the "System SKU" parameter
It is listed under the "System Resources" tab whose detailed information is visible in the right pane of the "System Information" window. The code listed to the right of the "System SKU" represents the model of your HP laptop.
The model number of your computer is also listed on the right of the "System Model" item
Step 5. Make a note of your computer's SKU number
By providing this information to a customer service technician or using it as a search key you will be able to get the correct support for your system or to download suitable drivers for the peripherals installed in your system or to purchase the hardware components you have need.
Method 2 of 2: Examine the Adhesive Label
Step 1. Turn off the laptop
Press and hold the "Power" button until the computer turns off. You can do this regardless of the version of Windows installed on your computer.
- Before shutting down the system, make sure that you have saved your work and that you have closed all files and programs that are still open.
- If you are using Windows Vista or a later version, you can click on the "Start" button located in the lower left corner of the desktop, and click on the option Shut down the system.
Step 2. Unplug the laptop from any power source
This way you can be sure that you are not at risk of receiving an electric shock when you remove the computer battery.
Step 3. Turn the laptop upside down and remove the battery from its compartment
In most cases, you will need to slide the battery retainer slider to the right or left and hold it in place as you slide the battery out of its slot.
If there is a sticker on the bottom of the underside of the laptop showing the computer model, you will not need to uninstall the battery
Step 4. Find the label that says "Product" or "Model"
This label is usually located somewhere other than where you can find information about certifications and regulations. Next to the item "Product" or "Model" there is an alphanumeric code. This is the model number of your HP laptop.
If you can't find the "Product" entry, look for the "Serial" section. Even if the serial number of the device does not match the model, the latter should be listed next to the former
Step 5. Make a note of the model number
Should you need expert technical assistance or need to contact HP support with your laptop model, you will be able to get the information you need faster.
