Do you need to make a tomato sauce? Or are you planning to make a preserve? If you need to peel off a large amount of tomatoes, you can use a simpler method than a knife or vegetable peeler. Let's see which one.
Steps
Step 1. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan
The pot and the amount of water should be large enough to hold all the tomatoes. Remember that tomatoes (and anything else) will displace an amount of water equal to their volume, so leave enough space at the top of the pot.
Step 2. Rinse the tomatoes
You can then remove the stalk with a knife while you wait for the water to boil. Store the tomatoes whole.
Step 3. Dip the tomatoes in boiling water
With a spoon or a long-handled skimmer, lower them into the water without letting them fall.
Step 4. Leave them in the water until the peel starts to crack, which generally takes about 30-60 seconds
Step 5. With a strainer or spoon remove the tomatoes from the water
Do not touch them as they will be hot. If you want, soak them in cold water to quickly bring them to room temperature.
Step 6. Remove the peel
Take them in your hand and slide the skin off with your fingers. Most tomatoes will release their skin very quickly. If in some point the peel should resist, help with a knife or dip them again in boiling water for a few seconds.
Step 7. If necessary, cut the tomatoes according to your recipe
Advice
- This method will cook the tomatoes slightly, even if only on the outside. If you need to have cooked tomatoes, you will need to continue cooking them.
- Most peaches can be peeled following the same method as tomatoes.
- If you only have a couple of tomatoes, using a knife may be quicker.
- If you are making a raw sauce, do not remove the skin from the tomatoes.
