This article shows you how to connect a computer to a network router / modem using an Ethernet cable and how to configure connection settings on both Windows and Mac computers.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Connect to the Router
Step 1. Purchase an Ethernet network cable
Cables of this type, also known by the abbreviation RJ-45, are characterized by two square connectors similar to those of a telephone cable, but much larger. To be able to make the wired connection between the router and the computer, you will need to use an Ethernet cable.
Also to connect the network router to the modem that manages internet access you will need to use a normal Ethernet cable
Step 2. Make sure the router is fully functional
It should be turned on and connected to the modem that manages web access via an RJ-45 network cable (if you are in a fully wired building, for example an office, it is very likely that you will need to plug the router into one of the wall net). The lights on the front of the network device should be on.
If the modem and the network router are integrated into one device, make sure it is turned on and properly connected to the internet line
Step 3. Locate the Ethernet ports on the router and computer
The RJ-45 port has a square shape and usually has an icon showing several small squares connected to a central horizontal line.
- On network routers, RJ-45 ports are usually labeled "LAN" (Local Area Network).
- If you are using a modem that also integrates the network router, you will simply have to connect the device to the internet line, however, using the port marked "Internet" or "WAN".
Step 4. Connect the network router and computer using an Ethernet cable
Once the router is up and running and the connection is established, the computer should be able to access the web almost instantly.
Method 2 of 3: Check the Ethernet Connection Status on Windows
Step 1. Access the "Start" menu by clicking the icon
It features the Windows logo and is located in the lower left corner of the desktop. Alternatively, press the ⊞ Win key on your keyboard.
Step 2. Click the ⚙️ icon
It is located at the bottom left of the "Start" menu.
Step 3. Select the Network and Internet item
It is visible at the top of the "Settings" window that appeared.
Step 4. Access the Ethernet card
It is located on the left side of the window.
Step 5. Check that the Ethernet connection is working properly
At the top of the main pane of the page you should see the name of the Ethernet connection and the words "Connected". This means that your computer's wired network connection is working properly.
If the Ethernet connection is down, try using a different port on the router or replacing the cable
Method 3 of 3: Configure the Ethernet Network Connection on Mac
Step 1. Enter the "Apple" menu by clicking the icon
It features the Apple logo and is located in the upper left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 2. Choose the System Preferences… item
It is one of the options present in the drop-down menu that appeared. The "System Preferences" dialog box will appear.
Step 3. Click the Network icon
The system window of the same name will be displayed.
Step 4. Select the "Ethernet" network connection
It is listed inside the left side panel of the "Network" window.
Step 5. Press the Advanced button
It is located in the lower right corner of the window.
Step 6. Access the TCP / IP tab
It is visible at the top of the "Advanced" window that appeared.
Step 7. Make sure "Using DHCP" appears in the "Configure IPv4" field
Otherwise, select the "Configure IPv4" field at the top of the window and choose the option Using DHCP.
Step 8. Press the Renew DHCP Now button
It is located on the right side of the window. This will ensure that your Mac can access the internet using the Ethernet network connection.
Step 9. Press the OK button
It is located in the lower right corner of the window. At this point the Ethernet network connection should be up and running.
