If you've been in a mirror lately and thought you were looking dull or washed out, maybe it's time to consider a different hair color. Instead of blindly picking a shade just because you like it, make sure it goes well with your complexion and skin undertone. Try to figure out the color of your complexion quickly, and then examine the undertone. Learn which hair colors suit your skin perfectly: the right shade will enhance your look and make you look regenerated.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Analyze Your Skin
Step 1. Consider the tone of your complexion
In principle, the skin tone can be pale, medium, olive or dark. This should be pretty obvious, but knowing for sure is helpful in choosing the right hair color. You shouldn't pick one that's perfectly suited to your complexion or undertone, and it shouldn't give you a banged look either.
Step 2. Try to find out the undertone of your skin
Regardless of the complexion, you need to determine the undertone of your skin: warm, cold or neutral. Put on a white shirt and stand in front of the mirror. If possible, allow yourself to be illuminated by natural light or an incandescent lamp. Look at the veins under the skin of the wrists to understand the undertone.
If the veins are predominantly blue or purplish, you have a cool undertone. If they are mostly green, you have a warm undertone. If they are a mix between the different colors, you have a neutral undertone
Step 3. Further analyze the undertone of your skin
If you have trouble understanding this, try asking yourself a few simple questions. Does gold or silver suit you better? If it's gold, you have a warm undertone. If it's silver, you have a cool undertone. What color are your eyes? If they are brown or nutty, you have a warm undertone. If they're blue, gray, or green, you probably have a cool undertone.
One of the simplest ways to spot skin undertone is to consider how easy it is to burn yourself in the sun. If instead of tanning you burn yourself, you have a cold undertone; on the other hand, if you tan easily, it's hot
Method 2 of 4: Choose a suitable tint for a dark complexion
Step 1. Balance the warm undertone
If you have a warm undertone, choose a shade that features rich brown or cinnamon undertones. This helps you balance yellow or otherwise warm skin tones.
If your skin has a red undertone and is a lighter shade, choose a medium-dark brown, black or black-blue for your hair. If your skin has a warm undertone that looks red but is darker, choose a more intense and nuanced dark color, and avoid light brown
Step 2. If you have cool undertones, warm up your complexion
With a cool undertone, choose a tint with warm highlights to brighten your hair. To create more highlights and depth, especially if they are already dark brown or black, you need a warmer shade.
Step 3. Enhance a golden undertone
If you have a warm, golden undertone and medium to dark skin, you can choose almost any shade, from light brown to dark brown, red to blonde. Highlights containing a red base can help you accentuate the golden undertone.
Method 3 of 4: Choose a Tint Suitable for a Light or Medium Skin Tone
Step 1. As for the hair color, choose a base rich in highlights
If you have a warm undertone with a hint of yellow, go for a tint in shades of chestnut, dark golden brown, auburn and mahogany. Then, make some highlights using a red base, such as cinnamon or copper.
If you go for a blonde base or blonde highlights, you may end up overemphasizing the yellow undertone
Step 2. Choose a medium color tint to create a base
If you have a warm undertone with a hint of red, avoid choosing a red or auburn shade. Instead, go for a honey or golden brown base, and add some caramel-colored streaks, which will give depth to the hair. This will minimize the redness of the undertone.
Step 3. Choose a dye of an intense color for the base of the hair
If you have a cool complexion with pink or blue undertones, look for an intense brown, red or blonde base. Then, choose highlights that have shades of honey or ash blonde: it will help you contrast the cold undertone.
If you have dark skin with cool undertones, choose a shade in shades of burgundy, cherry or garnet red. You can also use it as a base color or for highlights. The red and cold tones of these shades give a homogeneous and smooth appearance to the skin
Method 4 of 4: Choose a Suitable Tint for Olive Skin Tone
Step 1. Choose a warmer hair color
If you have olive skin with a warm or yellow undertone, go for a golden color for the base. For example, choose a honey blonde, auburn red, auburn brown or a coffee color.
If you do the highlights, try a warm red to really bring out the skin tone
Step 2. Choose a cool hair color
If you have olive skin with a cool undertone, which is common to most people with this skin type, choose a shade that enhances it. For example, go for ash blonde, platinum blonde, auburn red or purplish red.
If you have dark olive skin with cool undertones, avoid choosing a light ash blonde or similar color, as it will create too sharp a contrast
Step 3. Enhance the eyes
If your eyes are a warm color, such as hazel or chestnut, you may want to choose a tint that enhances them. For example, if you have hazel eyes with red spots, choose a color that has a reddish hue in order to make them stand out.
