If you've never driven a forklift before, this guide is sure to come in handy!
Steps
Step 1. Practice
Driving a forklift is completely different than driving a car. Forklifts steer thanks to the rear wheels, have unbalanced weight distribution, and often have counterintuitive controls. Depending on where you will be driving, you may need a driver's license or special training.
Step 2. Complete the preliminary to-do list
Observe the vehicle to verify that there are no damages or faults that could prevent the forklift from functioning properly. Pay particular attention to the hydraulic systems and the condition of the tires.
Step 3. Familiarize yourself with all the controls and indicators
You can do this by reading the vehicle manual.
Step 4. Note the size and shape of what you need to lift
Step 5. Make sure the forks you are using are adjusted to the correct width
Step 6. Lift an object only as high as necessary to move it to improve vehicle balance
Step 7. Observe the environment in which you work, and make sure it is clear of obstacles
Step 8. Start the forklift using the key and power button
Try the simpler operations. You will find levers and knobs that are used to move the forks up and down, to make the vehicle turn and to control its speed.
Step 9. Practice your forklift in an open area
Try lifting empty pallets or sandbags to get used to the controls. When you feel comfortable, you can start the task that has been assigned to you.
Advice
- Use your common sense to figure out at what height the weight is balanced.
- Drive safely and follow all safety measures indicated in the manual.
Warnings
- Park the forklift with the forks completely on the ground once you're done.
- Do not operate the forklift in an area where pedestrian or vehicle traffic is intense, or in slippery or otherwise unsafe conditions.
